Tipping a driver
We will be going to Sweden this summer and will be picked up by a driver. I say we should plan on tipping the guy/woman- my DH says no. What's the call? Thanks!

I never tipped anyone in Sweden (including the cabbie who took me into Stockholm) and was told that was fine by my host sister. Gratuities, I am sure, are always welcome, but not necessary.
|
Well we had a very long thread here on Fodor's about Tipping the Pilot..so why shouldn't one be Tipping a Driver?
|
In a word, your DH is not very "D"..in fact, he's a cheapskate!

I liked the comment "gratuities, I am sure, are always welcome, but not necessary". Doesn that mean the only reason to tip is because it is "necessary"? If he was nice, he did a great job and you appreciate what he did, give him a tip.

Hi M,
Unlike the US, where most service personnel rely on tips for a living, Europeans are better paid. A tip of 1-2 E to show that the driver did a good job is fine. 5E for extraordianry service. ((I)) |
Neopolitan- I am from Dallas and here it is not OK to skip the gratuity. Even if service is bad, people tip because it is socially "required" (granted, bad service only gets 10% or less but still. . .). So, I was trying to indicate that it isn't like that in Sweden.
