tipping

Me and my friends will be joining 2 1/2 day local tours in Amsterdam for my layovers (one on my way over and one coming back). As we have 6 people, the tour will only be for our group. The tours cost $330 Euros and $405 Euros respectively. How much tipping should our group give? Is 10% too much or is it the norm? We were originally thinking of $1 - $2 Euros per person for such a small trip.

Any comments is appreciated.

Hi M,

Your guide is charging you what he/she thinks his/her time is worth.

For an especially good tour - 15 to 20E tip.

Hi Ira,

Thanks for your post.

I understand Ira's line of thinking, but I think 10 % is much more appropriate. I've lived in Holland for 5 years and I know that Dutch don't tip a lot and don't expect much in way of tipping, but 15€ divided between 6 people seems pretty meager. Sure the guide is charging what they think their time is worth (every business owner will do that) but they still appreciate a decent tip for exceptional service.
If you feel your guide is exceptional and went the extra mile to make visit, it wouldn't be inappropriate for each of the 6 of you to come up with 5€ or so.

Ooops :)
I see that last sentence was a bit off.

If they go the extra mile to make your visit memorable and you feel they've exceeded your expectations it wouldn't be inappropriate...
