Timing for each stop while on Skye?
 

I'll be visiting Skye for the first time in June 2025 and would appreciate some feedback on the estimated timings for this portion of the itinerary in terms of time needed at each stop to ensure we have adequate time without rushing.

For context:

• We aren't big on hiking and aren't the fittest of folk so for places like the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, these will be photo stops where we only walk maybe a few hundred metres from the car park to catch a glimpse of the scenery rather than the full walks
• To allow for more realistic time frames, I've taken the estimated driving time from Google maps and doubled it for each leg on the road

Day 1: Arrival
Arrive in Portree around 5pm, free time in town

Day 2: Trotternish Loop + more

• Old Man of Storr (stop for 15-30 minutes)
• Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls (stop for 15-30 minutes)
• Quiraing (stop for 30-40 minutes)
• Duntulm Castle Ruins (stop for 15-30 minutes)
• Skye Museum of Life (estimating 1.5 hours to see)
• Uig Village (stroll around, allow about 1-1.5 hours)
• Fairy Glen (30 minutes)

Day 3: Northwest

• Neist Point Lighthouse (1.5-2 hours return for walk)
• Dunvegan Castle and Gardens (2 hours)
• Fairy Pools (around 1 hour return for walk)
• possibly a visit to Talisker but not sure we will have time

Day 4: Departure
Leave Portree in the morning and drive to Inverness, stopping via Eilean Donan (and elsewhere) along the way

In addition to feedback on whether the above timings are realistic, I'd be grateful if I could also get assistance with the following Qs:

1. Are there any neat lunch spots between Duntulm and Uig we can stop at before/after our time at the Skye Museum of Life (to avoid backtracking)?
2. Day 2 has more stopping/starting whereas Day 3 we go to fewer places because the sights are further apart. Given it'll likely take us over 90 minutes just to get to Neist Point, any suggestions as to where to stop along the way?
3. Any hidden gems along the way between any of the stops planned that are worth seeing or taking a slight detour for?

We were there in I believe 1992. In October. There was still only a ferry to get there. It was not what I expected, out of season and I was not prepared for Skye mentally. I have only read reports since then, but it seems Skye has really become an "it" place to visit, and why not if you're in the neighborhood? But it sounds crowded and awkward and filled with large vehicles and driving issues. Your stops seem a bit forced and obligatory for a quick photo at each spot rather than absorbing the rather stark and profound terrain and vibe. If you insist on going, maybe pick like one location and really spend time and savor it and tune into Skye rather than trying to hit every possible site and record it, but not enjoy it. Again, I was younger and Skye was an obligatory stop but I was not prepared for it and it kinda ruined my experience. It is a mysterious and mental place and a shame to rush it or just go to see it all and check the boxes. Something to consider. Good luck.

Skye isn't a place people can/should allocate 'times'. The days will be very (VERY) long in June so you can take as much time as you want. The scenery doesn't close at 5 PM ;) it will be daylight untill nearly 11PM. Just throw any ideas of a 'schedule' right out the window.

Day two -- The 'car time' drive from Portree around the whole of the Trotternish Peninsula will take about 2 - 2.5 hours. Maybe a tad longer if on a fine ((fingers crossed) June day when there is more traffic. Plus many stops. Parking can become an issue at the major beauty spots. Just plan on it taking most of the day . . .

Any hidden gems . . . Lots you'll run across lots of paces to stop but with just two days you really don't have time to explore other areas of the Isle.

This is VERY rural so there aren't really any settlements/restaurants. I think there is one just before you get to Duntulm (whether it is still there I have no idea) and one 'Monkstadt 1745' about 4 or 5 miles before you get to Uig but I don't think they are open for lunch. Just breakfast for their guests and a posh dinner seating. My recommendation would be to take a picnic lunch or eat at the hotel in Uig.

ps: I for the life of me can't think what one would do for 1.5 hours wandering in Uig. There is a good pottery and the water views and a small church.
