Timing between Mallorca/Barcelona Flight & International Flight
Not sure if I have a good enough buffer between flights or should consider staying an extra day. I have a flight with RyanAir leaving Mallorca at 8:10 arriving in Barcelona at 9am. I then fly from Barcelona to NYC at 11am. Is a 2 hour buffer enough at the Barcelona airport or would I be cutting it very close to make my intl flight?

You'll need more time. You have to change terminals, check in for your flight and clear security. 2 hours just isn't enough time, especially if you encounter any delay in Palma or when landing in Madrid. Allowing 3-1/2 hours should work. Most international carriers require you to be at the airport at least 2-1/2 hours before departure because of the crowds. The check in lines are generally shorter if you are a FF, or flying 1st class.

thank you. i was hoping it would work but i guess i will have to extend my stay one more day.

The OP is landing in Barcelona , not Madrid so changing terminals in not a big deal, but 2 hours is still too tight.
Picking up luggage can take time and ,as PP said, checking in and security to US is another time factor. The last thing you wish to do is miss the flight home! |
If the last thing you want to do is miss the flight home, go the night before. Unless this itinerary were protected all on one ticket, I would NEVER trust it no mater which airline was flying me in. Just yesterday my daughter's 20 minute flight from VLC-IBIZA left an hour late.
And a HUGE warning, although it is printed on your boarding pass, if you do not hold an EU passport you MUST have Ryanair STAMP your boarding pass before going through security. This is done at their ticket windows in Spain, but some have said at other airports it is done at the check-in counters. I have seen several people be turned away at boarding for this reason. Also, follow their rules to the tee.. they do not "bend" the rules once they have "caught" an infraction. Enjoy Palma |
What time of year?
In August the French air traffic controllers regularly playup and strike at very short notice. We flew out of Palma last week and were delayed for 1.5 hours. The flights to BCN maybe delayed due to the knock-on as the slots for northern Europe go straight over BCN airspace. I don't know technically whether this will apply but Palma at times can be the sort of place you would avoid if you need to keep to minute by minute schedules. We have flown in/out about 30 times in 40 years and it always amazes me how they frequently fail to get the basics right. last week the bag system broke down which delayed check in to the point where our plane missed its slot. Something seems to happen every other time use the airport. In short I would say 2 hours isn't enough. |
