Thanks to all for the advice.

neckervd - Thanks for your generous assistance. I know that providing this information takes a lot of time, and I am very grateful for your help. I feel so dumb but I have always found bus schedules so difficult to read - much more so than train schedules. If I am reading the train and bus schedules correctly, it doesn't appear that the bus runs any later than the train in terms of being able to get to Bellagio should our plane arrive very late - or am I missing something?

It appears that the latest options are

1) get to Milano Centrale before 21:20 (arriving there by either train or bus; latest train at 19:43, arriving Milano Centrale 20:35; latest bus at 19:50, arriving about 20:50); depart Milano Centrale at 21:20; arrive in Varenna at 22:35; take the ferry to Bellagio, assuming they will be running that late at night in May.

2) depart MXP by train at 18:43; arrive Como San Giovanni 19:59; depart Como San Giovanni by bus at 20:15; arrive Bellagio at 21:25.

If I am reading the schedules correctly, it appears that if we cannot get away from MXP by 19:50 (assuming the ferries from Varenna to Bellagio run after 22:35); or by 18:43 if we go straight to Bellagio (where we are staying), we will have to spend the night in Milan or hope that we can rent a car and drive to Bellagio.

That is probably very confusing. I love public transportation in Europe but never use it in the US so it is unfamiliar. I wish we had more of it available.

If you have a through ticket up to Milan, Lufthansa will book you on the next flight if you arrive too late at FRA in order to catch the 12.25one, most probably FRA dp 15.45, may be FRA dp 16.25 or 17.10 (to Milan Linate or MXP).

BTW: the last train with a ferry connection to Bellagio leaves Milano Centrale at 20.20.

Neckervd - Thanks again. Do you mean train to Como and ferry to Bellagio? Or train to Varenna with mid-lake ferry to Bellagio? Perhaps all this will be clearer once I have the time to print out all of these schedules and study them. And pray that our flight arrives on time! We have a long layover in Frankfurt so I am more concerned about our flight from there to Milan being late. But we have only ever had two delayed flights that I remember - in and out of Athens when I was traveling alone, and it all worked out in the end.

Don't worry: Lufthansa is usually in time (in constrast to low cost companies). Delays of more than 1 hr on local flights are a huge exception.

neckervd - Thanks for the reassurance! And, again, for your patient assistance. We first hoped to travel to Italy 24 years ago but it has simply never worked out, though we have been to other places in the meantime. Now that we are finally going, we hope for things to go as smoothly as possible.

to be totally honest, having done this ... its worth the extra money to book a transfer. It takes about 1 hr 15 - and if your plane is late the driver will wait for you.

Its about 80 Euros with Bellagio Taxi Service - and by the time you pay for the train tix and ferry tix for 2, I found it worthwhile to spend the extra and not have 3 train/ferry changes.

Newbie00 - Thanks for that information, I had checked another transfer service but they only had a few set runs for the day.

I found
http://www.bellagiotaxis.com/Bellagio_Taxi_Fares.html
I gives the fare for two travelers as 69.50 Euro per person; total = 139 Euro, which would be $187.

I also found http://www.bellagiotaxiservice.com/ but you have to request a quote, which I will do. Sounds like this is the one you used.

jean - Thanks but a little expensive for our pocketbook. - 100 euros for 2 people, about $135. It looks better for a larger group.

If you only have carry-on luggage it should be achievable. With checked-in luggage 2 hours may not be sufficient.

As Terminal 2 is used principally by low-cost airlines it is unlikely that checked-in luggage can be routed through to your final destination.

If you only have carry-on luggage bear in mind that what you can carry-on at Dubai may be over the limit for the low-cost airline.
