Time allowance from Gatwick to London Train station
 

My husband and I need to get from Gatwick airport to whichever ( feel free to help me out here too) train station we need to be at to catch the rapid train to |Glasgow on the 14th of May. We land at 7:30 a.m. and I have no idea what time to book our departure on DB train. Or, would you suggest thaqt we transfew to Heathrow and catch a connecting flight to Scotland? For the dates that we wanted to travel, Gatwick was our only option. Due to other time commitments we will visit England on the days prior to our return flight. We want to get to Scotland on the 14th with the least amount of delay. It doesn't really matter if we go to Edinburgh or Glasgow at this point.
Any advice or suggestions would be wonderful.

You can get a train from Gatwick directly to Kings Cross where you catch the trains to Scotland.

I'd allow at least 3 hours. It shouldn't take nearly that long, but if you land late or if there are snafus in immigration or collecting your bags you could be held up at LGW.

Virtually all of the trains to Glasgow leave from Euston. Whilst you can go from Kings Cross you will invariably have to change at Edinburgh and it takes an hour longer.

Euston is a 15 minute walk from Kings Cross (not much faster on the Tube or by bus) or you can get the train to Victoria then Tube to Euston

Book tickets 6-12 weeks in advance from www.eastcoast.co.uk for best fares and unless you are travelling before 9:30am on weekdays AVOID the Gatwick Express

But I agree - allow 3 hours.

Alternatively why not just fly - both BA & Easyjet have several flights a day to Glasgow & Edinburgh and it's a lot easier to get from the airport to city from those airports than it is to go through London

There are trains from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh every hour and alternate trains continue to Glasgow without the need to change. It's about four and a half hours to Edinburgh and another hour to Glasgow.
From London Euston, there are direct trains to Glasgow every hour with a journey time of about four and a half hours.
There are trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh every 15 minutes.

Strictly speaking, you can't get a train from Gatwick to Kings Cross. The Gatwick train arrives at St Pancras Domestic railway station. That's only a short walk - couple of hundred yards at most from platform to platform - from Kings Cross, and it's shorter than the walk from St P Domestic to Euston.

But the Virgin train from Euston to Glasgow is usually 20 mins or so faster than the East Coast train from KX. So the balance of convenience is a pretty fine one. especially if there's a significant price difference.

Normally I'd recommend taking a train rather than flying. However, British Airways has a flight leaving Gatwick at 11:45 that arrives in Glasgow at 13:10. BA also has a flight leaving Gatwick at 12:00 and arriving in Edinburgh at 13:25.
