Tiger Mosquito?
 

Hey all, Traveling to the Loire in September. My traveling companion has a friend who lives in Burgundy and has her very concerned about Tiger Mosquitos. I'm not seeing any mention anywhere on the forum. Google search certainly confirms their presence in Europe but no dire stories or even much info since 2020. They seem to be by far the worst in Italy, and no stories in that specific forum either. Just looking for any insights/experiences anyone else has had or researched. Hoping to alleviate my friends concerns :)

Yes, this is the type of info I have (last updated in 2021). I'm trying to determine what the impact has been on folks traveling recently - what has the experience been.

No experience personally, as so far they don't live in the Netherlands, though they do turn up occasionally in imports. They are common in Western south of the Loire estuary and a little way inland and south eastern France.
You are as likely, of not more likely to be bothered by them in the US. They are resident from California through to Florida and up into the Midwest and New England.
Whilst they carry Dengue and Chikungunya there has only been one outbreak of the latter, in Italy many years ago now. I haven't heard of any cases of Dengue in Europe from them but there could have been I suppose.

If you are concerned then take the normal anti mosquito precautions, long sleeves, covered legs, socks etc and or DEET. Make sure there is no standing water near your acommodation (unless of course you are staying in hotels).

Thanks for the info - I am fortunate to live at almost 9K feet in CO so we don't have mosquito up here - but yes, looks like you are correct about their spread in the southern US! I am not too worried, but trying to calm my travel companion :)

Shame our new garden planting is all dead though.

With a very dry summer, mosquitos are not much of a problem this year. However, the hornet population has exploded. Whatever you do, do not try to swat them. They don't like that at all.
