Sign up with SRO Audiences, they handle the tickets for many shows.
I've attended tapings of the Graham Norton show through them. Try to get booked as a priority audience member (explain to them you will only be in town for certain dates and REALLY want to see this show, etc.).
For the shows I've attended, there were a few lines...priority, regular and people who just showed up at the last minute. Be prepared for long lines (get there early) and don't be surprised if there's some chaos...they didn't seem that well organized. I was directed first to one line, then another, then back to the first, etc.
Be prepared also for a lame warm-up act, usually some assistant producer who thinks he's a comedian. After the show is over, you may also be asked to wait while they tape promos for upcoming shows.
It's free and can be fun, so give it a try.
