Tickets for Neuschwanstein
 

We'll be visiting Neuschwanstein Friday, September 20 and have a few questions. First, do we need to order tickets online or are we safe to wait until we get there to buy tickets? Second, I haven't been able to find the times of tours and how long the tour takes. Third, is it possible to see Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwanstein in the same day?

You can probably see both in one day - in a rush - as long as they are still on high season hours. The websites will have tour times - and I presume you will want to sign up for tours in English.

It looks like you can see both and buy a combined ticket but you have to visit Hohenschwangau first.

You can see both on the same day. What time you want to take the tour would impact whether you should buy online or wait. The last time I was there I waited til the end of the day to get tickets for the last tour of Hohenschwangau. As I recall, it took about an hour for the tour, and I didn't have to wait in line at all. If you are wanting to tour Neuschwanstein earlier in the morning, it is probably wise to pre-order tickets so you don't have to wait in line and take the chance of them selling out. The Neuschwanstein tour is about an hour too, as I remember, but it was several years more remote than Hohenschwangau.

When buying tickets, you need to take into account the time it will take you to get to the top of each castle to start the tour. For Neuschwanstein you can take the shuttle up to Marienbrucke and walk down to the castle, walk all the way up (bad idea) or take the carriage a bit over half way up and walk the rest of the way. For Hohenschwangau it's a shorter distance and less steep so you just walk.

You will order the King's ticket which will allow you to visit Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castle on the same day.

It is very easy and there is plenty of time allotted to visit both castles.

Yep, if you buy the combined ticket, there is plenty of time to see both.

I don't think that the tour times are listed on the web site because they set them up based on demand - so when you buy the tickets on line, you request a tour time and then they assign you to whatever tour in your language ends up being close to your requested time.

If you buy your tickets on the day of your tour, you just buy tickets for the next available tour in your language.

Thanks everyone for so many good replies! Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond. Life has a way of interfering with my daydreaming about travel:)
One final question: am I correctly understanding the website michele_d posted above that if you buy a combination ticket both castles must be visited on the same calendar day? Our preference would be to visit Hohenschwangau one afternoon & Neuschwanstein the next morning. Of course, separate tickets are just 1 Euro more, so I suppose that might be the way to go. Am I missing anything?

Yes. The combo ticket is for the same day. Is there a reason you cannot do them both the same day? Since you are there already anyways?

If we are driving, where is the nearest parking? What are the alternatives? We have infant with us.

Parking is centrally located right by the ticket booth, between both castles. Very easy. Instead of walking up to Neuschwanstein, you can take the shuttle, must easier, especially with an infant. If you have time sit by the lake for a bit. The view is gorgeous.

there are enough parking-lots 4Lots. you pay 5 Eur per day,

there is also a free parking but you have to walk for along distance 10 min to get to Ticket center
