Three weeks in Europe - where should we go???

I have no idea where to begin in terms of planning my three week trip. I want variety and to see as much as possible without being overwhelming. I was thinking Germany, Switzerland and Italy (renting a car). Is that too many countries? Will that be enough variety in atmosphere/pace? Any other suggestions about where to go or what things to see specifically?

It is easy to spend three weeks in Italy. It is rewarding to get to know onw country well.

Don't think countries. Think of a geographic area, preferably one that's not too big.

Peruse some guide books and/or the destination guides available here on Fodors (the second menu option on the horizontal list at the top of this page). Make a list of places and/or things you would like to see. We can't make this list for you. Find them on a map and try to narrow your plans to 4-6 places within a reasonable area. Research how much time it will take you to move to the next destination either by public trans or car. (You can fly farther distances if your budget allows.) Keep in mind you'll lose a half to a full day every time you change hotels/base towns.

What time of year?
Jean has very good advice--take heed.

Agree with all of the above - duh - I could spend 3 weeks in Germany or in Italy (places I visit kinda regularly) and not see everything I haven't yet seen. Hone in, per Jean & Bob, let us know what time of year, what's your transportation mode, what are the things you like to see (me = architecture, WWII, birds, etc.) Do you just want a taste of each of these countries or focus in on some aspect (e.g., mountains, wine)? Jeez, the first time I came to Europe (1970 - when I graduated from college) I stayed almost a year and only came back b/c I ran out of $$. Cheers, Kathleen

End of July/beginning of august

2009? You better start planning and start making reservations..These are very popular months especially in August.
The Parisians or the Romans leave the city for they monthly vacation to the beach, seas, mountains etc..,
Dont wait too long.

August -- then I'd scratch most of Italy. Very crowded, and VERY hot/humid.

Italian Lakes, Alps, Bavaria, etc -- think north and altitude.
