I fully agree with BDRK, but that doesn't mean that you should give Schaessburg, Kronstadt and Hermannstadt (the town where the actual German speaking president of Romania was born) a miss.

good advice from BDKR though of course Prince Charles is Prince of Wales (or as Trump says, Prince of Whales) but I'm just being picky.

Thank you all so very much. The information, advice and picture links you all have given have been very helpful as we narrow our destinations to make our three weeks in Belgium and Romania as exciting, enlightening and relaxing as possible.

With so much to see in both countries, we want to be able to see as much as possible without running ragged, and we are now thinking about adding a fourth week to our trip and fly to Corfu to have some relaxation and beach time (if any of you have been there, please let me know if it is as nice as it looks).

We have checked and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp will not be open by next summer so that is a real disappointment. That would have made our decision an easy one between time in Brussels or in Antwerp so we are still considering both (but leaning still towards Antwerp). Ghent looks fantastic and we will stay there a few nights and also dedicate at least one night in Bruges.

We will want to fly direct into Romania so we will look at either flying into Bucharest, Cluj or Sibui. As well, we will be spending a week in the Transylvania region and hope to have two different bases from which to see the area.

Check back soon!

Andrea

Adding a 4th week would be great, but not for a 3rd destination. 1 week in Transylvania will be very short, chances are that you'll be sucked in by the tourist circuit doing Brasov, Bran, Sibiu, Sighisoara and won't have time left to enjoy slow travel and experience nature and the village life. Seaside beaches are not the only places to relax, especially not in July/August when they are at their hottest and most crowded. A natural hot spring in Székelyföld shared with a handful of locals and Hungarian tourists may be just as relaxing if not more than a beach in Corfu that you must share with primitive, pissed British chavs., Unfortunately Corfu has gone far from the time when Gerald Durrell spent here his happiest days, he wouldn't recognise his beloved island anymore, at leat not in summer.

Each to her own.

If you could schedule your trip for August and be in Corfu in early September it would be much better, after all it is still a very beautiful island, but the problem is that I don't see direct flights from Romania.

Antwerp has many other museums to keep you busy. Other than the ones already stated by Tulips, there's the MAS (not only for its collection but also for the most beautiful view over the city and the harbour), the Red Star Line Museum (audiovisual museum that tells testimonies of people who have boarded the Red Star Line from Antwerp to New York between 1873 and 1935), DIA (House of Diamonds), Chocolate Nation, Museum Plantin-Moretus, Maagdenhuis, Rockoxhuis (not to be missed), ...

Ditto. You said you wanted to relax. Having time for another coffee or wine in a cafe, spending an extra night in a smaller town, that's relaxing. Finding a spa for a massage and sauna, that's relaxing.

Every time you get on a plane and jump locations, figure you're losing just about a 1/2 day. And airports are never relaxing.

It's a pity that Museum of Fine Arts will be closed, but it's not the only great museum in Brussels.

I don't know if you interested in anything else than art, but Brussels has an excellent military museum and a railway museum among many other museums.

The Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren(a suburb of Brussels) is a must see where you can surely find something of interest for you as it has history, natural history, ethography and talking of art you can see how African folk art inspired the modern art.

Good morning.

The Fine Arts Museum that will be closed is the one in Antwerp. Of course, there are others that look wonderful as well, including the ones you mentioned, so we should have our fill of art during our time in Belgium (including the Museum De Reede and the Rubens House in Antwerp).

We are planning to spend seven days in Belgium, 12 days in Romania then add a week on a Mediterranean Island. We have always wanted to visit Corfu, but Corsica, Sardinia, Elba and Kefalonia are also on our list.

Andrea

Corsica will be the most expensive Island between mid July and mid August, followed by Sardinia, Elba and - much cheaper - Kefalonia and Kerkyra

Wizzair has direct flights from Bucharest to Alghero. Sardinia is a very beautiful island.

Thanks everyone.

What we are looking for is a beautiful island that we can explore (we will rent a car) but also be able to stay in a medieval town that is on, or very near, to wonderful beaches, for those days where we just want to relax. This way, it gives us easy access to restaurants within the town and the option to walk during the evenings. We were in Tropea over the summer and found it to be wonderful, so we are looking for that feeling but on a Mediterranean island.

Alghero IS a medieval town close to the good sandy beaches north of Fertilia,
Bunifaziu is a medieval town too and many of the crowded beaches along both coasts, West and East, are very nice.
The city of Corfu is medieval too and there are many beaches a few miles around.

Ibiza. So much more than the 'party island' it is famous for. The relaxed atmosphere, the nice beaches, secluded idyllic bays, the Dalt Vila (Ibiza old town) with its narrow streets and scenic little squares, Cala D'Hort with the famous Es Vedra rock at sunset, ...

Thanks Myriam,

I was looking at Majorca and Menorca as well, and never thought to include Ibiza.

So much talk about how Ibiza is just for kids and partying. I will look into it now.
