Three romantic days in Switzerland-where to stay?
 

Hello all!

Me and my lovely boyfriend have three days to spend in mid-august, just after one week of hard work in Switzerland.

Where should we go?

We don't want to travel around - we just want get to an interesting, not to crowded place with a beautyful scenery, enjoy the mountains and take short trips around the place.

I was thinking some small village in the mountains, or near a lake. Some small, hidden get-a-way gem.

We will be longing for a romantic hotel with good beds and good service/food.

It's our first days off in a long time, plus, we have a toddler at home who keeps us busy at nights - so these three days will be for just us two! So we want it to be romantic.

Kindly give me some suggestions, we have never been to Switzerland and we don't know the place at all!

(Or maby we should take a train over to Italy or France, and skip Switzerland after work?)

How about a car free village in the mountains? I would suggest either Wengen or Murren.

I love the Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald. Grindelwald doesn't fall into the car free village category. Is is a great place to access all of the Bernese Oberland from.

Wengen or Murren...it doesn't get much better than that!

I stayed at the Riffelalp Resort in Zermatt last year. Although beautiful, it pales in comparison to the Bernese Oberland.

I'd suggest Murren or Wengen too. In August, they may be busy during the day, but quiet at night as many tourists just pass through.

I like the Hotel Bellevue in Wengen and the Alpenruh in Murren, both 3 star places. The Bellevue has a gorgeous corner unit room with two balconies. We stayed there once and we could see the Jungfrau from the bed.

If you're looking to splash out, you might consider the Alpin Palace Hotel in Murren, but be aware they have disco:

In mid-August, in Switzerland, I would head for a car-free village. I was in Grildenwald in August once and was nudged off the sidewalk by the crowds of tourists. If you are anywhere that the tour busses can get to (or tend to stop at), you'll run into that problem.

So if you head to the Oberland, definitely go to one of the car-free villages (Wengen or Mürren). One alternative would be to go to Brienz on Lake Brienz or Thun on Lake Thun, both of which are pretty much passed by tourists and tour busses.

Another idea would be to stay in the Engadin Valley, a high-altitude paradise of towering peaks, glaciers, and Alpine lakes that English-speaking tourists haven't yet over-done. When I was there a few years ago, all around me were serious hikers, all speaking German; in fact, my few Swiss and German friends prefer this area for their own trips. If money is no object, you could head for the 5-star Hotel Waldhaus in Sils, or a real village retreat would be in Guarda. A larger town might be Pontresina or Scuol.
