Three Or Four Days in Sweden
 

I will be in Sweden for three or four days, in May, 2014. I don't like to move from place to place, so am thinking of just using Stockholm as my base. I'd rather get to know one or two areas well, rather than running all over the place and only getting little pieces of a lot of areas. How would you recommend I spend my time? Is there enough to do in Stockholm for 3 or 4 days, or would you recommend any day trips? I am a pretty typical tourist. I don't mind touristy things, although I do enjoy getting off the beaten path. I'm not a big hiking, outdoor kind of person, and seeing one or perhaps two museums would be my limit. Also, what web sites would you recommend to help plan my trip?

You can easily spend a week or more in Stockholm - esp if you you brief day trips - as in boat trip to Drottigholm Castle etc.

Personally I would find it hard to fill a week in Stockholm, 3 nights is about OK. It is a beautiful city and exploring the outdoors is a must, so it is a pity if you are not into that. The outdoors in Scandinavia is what it is all about. The scenery and islands all linked by bridges are lovely. Worthwhile activites inc the Vasa Museum which I thought was extremely interesting, the Royal Palace, the old town (Gamla Stan) and a boat trip or two esp to see the archipelago. If you like food markets, Ostermalm Saluhall is worth a visit.

Pics can be worth a 1000 words, they say..even from an amateur photog..so here's Stockholm for you...I see no reason why you can't enjoy this most pleasant city for a three or four day stay. But as Odin says, get out into the countryside even if only a boat trip to Drotninngholm. Hotel possibility, The Clarion Mornington...walking distance to old town (Gamla Stan), on Nybrogatan in Ostermalm district, a block from that Saluhall (see pix) mentioned by Odin. Hotel should be in the vicinty of $200, not sure.

Thank you for your replies. I think I didn't do a good job in describing my interests. When I said I'm not an outdoors person, I meant that I am not into hiking, bicycling, etc. I love beautiful countryside, and would definitely want to experience the natural beauty of Sweden. I'm just not a camping, rock climbing type of person. Hopefully, this will help others point me in the right direction.

The skansen should also be visited.

I think you could probably get by on 3 days, but 4 would be better as it would let you take a day trip or two, perhaps a few-hour boat ride into the archipelago and/or a day-trip to Uppsala. And I would recommend that you invest in at least one guidebook (if not more). Go to your local bookstore or library to see which formats suit you best.

You can very easily fill a week in Stockholm and the outlying area. Read the Millenium Series before you go if you haven't done that yet.

We spent 2 1/2 days there but could have easily filled 4 if given the time. I highly recommend Millesgarden in Stockholm. It was absolutely enchanting. Also agree that The Vasa is a must see as well as City Hall.

I have been to Stockholm several times for up to a week. I cast another vote for the amazing Vasa ship museum. I made a day trip to Uppsala, which I recommend. If you get bored take one of the Silja Line overnight ferries to Helsinki, spend the day there, and overnight back to Stockholm. Silja runs some huge ferries which are basically party cruises, very popular with the locals.

Take a ferry out into the Archipelago. Super easy and it's beautiful. I doubt whether the Millennium trilogy would give you an accurate picture of Stockholm, but if the gutters of Södermalm are your thing, they might.

Silja cruises are full of people on the booze (that's why they're popular: cheap booze) so I wonder about their desirability.

Other things to do: sauna in Sturebad, dinner at Berns, explore funky boho Södermalm, yes to Saluhall.

Stockholm is an extremely pleasant city, so have fun

The best part of the booze cruise to Helsinki is the journey thru the small islands, it is really beautiful to see.

For a week, it would be good to get out to see the countryside and the archipelago, as I think 1 week in Stockholm itself might be too much, or it could be I have been too many times. Small places like Arkösund are gorgeous

Unfortunately we were only in Stockholm for two days. I would love to return for more time. The Vasa Museum is an absolute must IMO. Very very interesting. We also thoroughly enjoyed roaming around Skansen for half a day. We spent another half a day poking in and out of the little shops in Gamla Stan. Found some wonderfully unique corkscrews for my collection.

Both my husband and myself had the same impression of Stockholm: a very clean and lovely city. Just crisp, clean and lovely mix of old and new. Will definitely return.
