Three nights in Marseille
I am off to Marseille in a couple of weeks for three nights... what do people recommend seeing and doing? I'm not a particular museum person and just like wandering and taking in the sights.
Is a day trip to Montpellier or Aix en Provence recommended? or will four full days in Marseille keep us busy? I'll be approaching 5 months pregnant so I don't think I'll be wanting to over-do it too much! Thanks! |
well, they have a nice park in Marseille (Longchamp). I think there is a museum up there but you don't have to go to it (the fine arts), as well as the Palais http://www.marseille-provence.info/m...longchamp.html
Also, you'd want to go up the hill to see Notre Dame de la Gare church, quite a view from up there, http://www.marseille-tourisme.com/en...e-de-la-garde/ And walk around the port and old quarter, of course. You probably could do a day trip with 4 days, but I'd go to Cassis, not those cities. |
thanks for your help! cassis looks lovely!

I realized my typo is kind of funny -- Notre Dame de la Gare (Our Lady of the Train Station).
I took a local train to Cassis, it doesn't take long, but I imagine there is a bus, see http://www.ot-cassis.com/fr/de-marseille.html |
We spent 3 days in Marseille.
We did a walking tour using: http://www.marseilleprovencegreeters.com/en/ We ended up spending the entire day with the guide, Patrick, who was personable and a native. You of course, don't have to spend that much time on the tour. Do book NOW, the need lead time. They only ask for a donation. Cassis is lovely, we spend a nice few hours there, having a wonderful lunch overlooking the sea. If you feel up to it, a day trip to Aix is nice. We did a walking tour there too, through the Tourism office, very reasonably priced and knowledgeable guide. Montpellier is a nice city; we spent 4 days there but not sure it is worth a day trip. |
You can take a boat ride to the Calanques from either Marseille or Cassis. I talk about it from Cassis in my trip report:
