Three 'dream' dinners in Rome that capture its essence?
 

I'm curious to know, if you were three nights in Rome and wanted to experience a good sample of Roman cuisine, where would you go on each of these three evenings for dinner?

Disclaimer: a 'dream' dinner does not mean (at least to me) 5 star service and prices to go with them. They can be small trattorias, little mom-and-pop places or even pizzerias, which capture the essence of everything Roman because of their food and ambiance.

Artichokes at a place in the Ghetto (possibly Piperno), pasta at Vecchio Roma and seafood at La Rosetta.

My favorite meal in Rome was at a wonderful place near Piazza Navona.

Ristorante Montevecchio sits in tiny Piazza Montevecchio. The restaurant is what I guess I would call casually elegant. The service was welcoming and charming, the food was delicious and the atmosphere -- in summertime, dining outside -- was especially delightful.

I think I heard about in from a review in the New York Times.

I'd make a beeline for this place if I had the chance to go back to Rome.

Just returned from 10 days in Rome - lots of wonderful food experiences. Here are three that were memorable for the food and/or atmosphere.

L'Osteria de Memmo at Via dei Soldati 22-23 (just north of Piazza Navonna on a small side street). Absolutely wonderful food....do not miss the mixed antipasti...almost enough food on that tray for two people. Lots of traditional menu choices, plus a number of delicious fish dishes. My husband had monk fish cooked in tomato sauce - it was fabulous. Open for lunch and dinner.

Cul de Sac at Piazza Pasquino 73, also near Piazza Navona, just a half-block east. Real food - everything was delicious - don't be afraid to experiment with unfamiliar dishes. Indoor or outdoor seating; lunch and dinner. Great selection of wine.

Last but not least, a pizza place about two blocks east of Piazza Navona - da Bafetto. Fantastic Roman pizza, antipasti, salads, beer/wine. Always crowded - get there early or be prepared to wait. The owner, "Bafetto" is a real character!

One last recommendation - if you like chocolate, try the Chocolate Tartufo at Tre Scalini right on Piazza Navona. Don't eat dinner there - just get the Chocolate Tartufo desert "to go" and sit on a bench in Piazza Navona and enjoy!

No more dreams of food? Anyone else?

The restaurant where Alfredo sauce was created is supposedly in Rome near the Piazza di Spagna. I'm going off memory from years ago, but you can probably commence to googling and dig it up.
