ctoner, instead of driving back to Barcelona, have you thought of looking at dropping the van in Italy and flying back to Barcelona? Very cheap airfares can be had if you book early.

Doing some "what if" research on Kayak, I was able to find many fares from Pisa to Barcelona (October) for around $150 per person. If you weigh that against driving time and car rental, you'd have more time in either Italy or Barcelona.

Just a thought. Good luck!

I think this is an interesting trade off. While avoiding a cross boarder drop-off charge, the OP seems to be spending two days back tracking to the starting point while feeding and lodging six people for two days. Whether it would have been less tiresome and costly to cut off the trip short by two days and just fly back from Italy with one way rental or a segmented car rentals would require more considerations and computations. For this particular OP, this no longer matters as the roundtrip fare is already a sunk cost.

I wouldn't stay in La Spezia. It is a pretty gritty port town. We stayed once as a jumping off point for the Cinque Terra. That was enough. Lerici would be a close-by, much prettier alternative. Or if you are just day-tripping to the CT, you could stay in Lucca. It's lovely and fun in its own right. Pisa would also work, though it's much bigger. It gets a bad rap because of the obvious tourist trap stuff, but off the beaten path it's an interesting university town.

Thanks Sarge 56.. It's so good of you to look into this, but doing that we would still be spending a lot on the drop off charges. We have a bit of a strategy, wherein we will meander back to Barcelona and make an adventure out of it, anyway. Yes, for alot of people, this is a bit ass backwards but it is what it is. Just have to figure out a nice place to stay after we leave the Cinque Terre /Lucca area before we fly out on the 20th.

Thanks greg. I appreciate your input.

Harriet_hughes, yes...thanks..the more i read and listen to the great ppl on Fodors Forum, I have to agree. You have stayed there, so that's great info, first hand. Thanks again
