Thoughts on the Metropole in Brussles?

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone had stayed at the Metropole in Brussles recently? I had heard that the rooms were a bit shabby. Is this true?

BTilke Aug 11th, 2008 08:53 AM

It's ok, gets a lot of people in town for conventions. I don't care for the location, very blah. However, I do like the Metropole's cafe very much, that does have atmosphere and some of their waiters used to work at our favorite cafe on the Blvd. Waterloo (the Dior store is where it used to be).
Is there a reason you're considering that hotel?
Also, FWIW, the Sofitel Toison d'Or aka Sofitel Louise has just had a major renovation and is now one of those "design" hotels. I think it looks awful, white everywhere you turn, and IMO it's going to look dated very quickly. Still, it's a 4-star hotel that often has rooms in the 110€ range. However, if you don't need airco, the NH Stephanie is one of the best 4 star values in town...you can often find rooms for 70€ a night.

Thanks BTilke. I'm doing research for the upcoming Belgium guide. I haven't been to this property, so I wanted to see what others thought.

The unrenovated rooms can be a bit worn. The refurbished ones are fine. There is a variety in the rooms, since the hotel is actually two buildings.

Their internet service is very expensive and not too good (slow).

I find the service to be consistently above-par, especially as a return guest (two to three times a year).

The bar is nice, but very expensive. I love the room-service breakfast.

What name do you propose to use for the capital city?

Lawchick Aug 12th, 2008 03:41 AM

It's completely shabby. There is a lot better value to be had in Brussels.

The bar is nice and the lobby has a nice old feel....but I certainly wouldn't stay there.

Thanks for all your input guys. I appreciate it a lot. I just posted about tips for beating the Euro in Belgium. Any tips would be most appreciated.

Padraig, is that a trick question? The capital is Brussels. Are you referring to which spelling I'm going to use?

Alexis - you misspelt Brussels in the topic title - that's what Padraig is getting at I think.

And I call myself an editor. Thanks for the catch.
