I'm so happy to see you mention Bernay. It's a lovely town. It wasn't damaged in the war so it's got lots of half-timbered houses in very good shape. There is at least one building on the main street which still has its medieval storefront. But something we haven't seen anywhere else is an original Renaissance courtyard with a well, just off the main street but hidden. Several rivers run through channels in the town, which adds to Bernay's charm.

I did a photo report of Bernay on a day when we drove from the Perche to about as far north as you can go in Normandy.

We've considered staying at, or at least having lunch at Le Moulin Fouret if we go through Bernay again. It's one of Michelin's Bib Gourmands, which means it's reasonably priced.

While you are in or near Dinan, it's worth the short drive to visit the hillside village of Léhon, right along the river. It's actually walkable from Dinan, but we didn't know that when we were there.

This area near Dinan is packed with flowery villages. We visited one September and drove from one flowery village to another. There were some knockout floral displays. June is the start of the season, so probably not as exciting, but fingers crossed for you.

I have such great memories of this area. When we spent about five days cycling in Brittany, our favorite towns were Dinan and Cancale. Dinan is a town one can meander around and delightfully get lost in. We rank our mussels in cream here as the best ever, and we'd each top our meals with a Ker y Pom (apples baked in buttery pastry dough) fresh from one of the many kiosks that dot the town. I'm a sucker for "petit trains"--those little tourist trains that are often to be found in French towns--and Dinan has one. Just don't sit right behind the engine.

We stayed on a hill outside of Cancale at the Chateau Richeux. Our daughters' room had a view of Mont St Michelle in the distance. We would traverse the Custom Officer's Path (Sentier des Douaniers) there and explore all the activities dealing with oysters. Making our mind up about which delicious restaurant meal we would try was always our biggest obstacle. We did not want to leave.
