Thoughts on Hotels in Rome
 

We (husband and I AND the 2 kids)are thinking about staying at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome. Any thoughts? Any suggestions for comparable hotels?

Where is it-I travel to Rome quite frequently for work and have never heard of it.

It's a Starwood hotel on Via Veneto.

The address is actually Via Vittorio E. Orlando, 3. It is just south of Via Venti Settembre by Piazza di Repubblica.

Like Jean said, the St. Regis Grand Hotel is one of the 3 Starwood Hotels in the area; the other ones are Eden Hotel and the Westin Excelsior. They are all about the same price (about 420euros a night). It is rated fairly high on Tripadvisor website: No. 18 of 1134 hotels in Rome.

We liked the Sofitel Roma.

The Via Veneto is not well situated for sightseeing the major attractions. At one time it was the "high society" avenue but I believe it has lost its luster. We have stayed at the Weston there which is next to the US Embassy but much prefer the smaller hotels in the Piazza Navona area or other areas in the historic center. Even the top of the Spanish Steps is better than Via Veneto or that area. My comments are in terms of location.

I've stayed at the St. Regis with my two daughters. The hotel is gorgeous, the rooms luxurious and the service exceptional but they do not have family rooms and we had to get two connecting rooms for the four of us. This is of course very expensive. Breakfast is not included in the room rate unless you are paying with an Amex Platinum card. We didn't mind the location as we love to walk everywhere and the hotel is across the street from a metro stop and several bus lines.

The walk uphill is further than the Steps and Navona areas, but there's really nothing wrong extremely wrong in staying in the Via Veneto area. Navona is right there in the middle of things, but it's also quite busy and noisy.

It is not located on the Via Venteto, is is located on the Via Vittorio, a bit northwest of the train station, near the Piazza Republica. I haven't stayed there Fromnyc, but location wise it wouldn't be my first choice.

You're right, LoveItaly. The street changes names. Via Veneto is the section to the north, closer to the Villa Borghese. It's not my location choice either.
