thoughts about Trieste?

We were thinking about a week-long visit to Trieste in March when the college where I teach goes on spring break. What can you tell us about this city?

Our preference is to find a self-catering-type apartment, and just settle in. We like to shop daily in markets and get to know local shops and restaurants. Anyone have a source of such rentals?

What are some of the special sights?

This is a proper vacation, not just a tourist-see-as-much-as-you-can jaunt.

We are interested in all experiences!

Thanks -- Ellen

I spent a night in Trieste years ago. We were passing through. My ex-wife called it the city of millimeters because of the way they drive there.

For a good read get Jan <?> Morris' "Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere."

If you want to hang out in that area I would also spend time in Ljubljana. It is a beautiful city.

What is your attraction to Trieste? I would get bored in 2 days there.

You can find links to apartment accommodation on the Trieste turism website. Use the Italian version, not the English version, as their English translation is poor. Choose "Allogiare a Trieste" then from the pull-down menu "Appartimenti per le vacanze".
Not all choices have a website, but an orange arrow indicating "sito web" will send you to the website:

I spent two nights in Trieste and had plenty to keep me busy. I don't know about an entire week though. Day trips to Ljubljana and Rovinj might be nice. You can take the train to the first and a bus to the latter.
