I thought "Withnail and I" was hilarious -- and it has a big cult following. I don't think it was meant to be depressing -- or "realistic".
In general, I agree with the commenter who didn't like Jane Austen films. The exception is "Sense and Sensibility" -- I thought the film improved on the book in one way -- the director solved the problem of dreary old Colonel Brandon marrying the delicious Marianne by casting Alan Rickman (in sexy older man mode) as Colonel Brandon. Not that this has anything to do with the main topic, but never mind... |
I know probably a dozen people who would immediately name "Withnail and I" in their all-time top five. It may not have taken in much at the box office but it is a perennial superstar at the video store.

Withnail and I - thanks for that - never heard of it but will track down
As for yanks not producing such films i think that's not correct - just that you in the Motherland never hear of them We have an esteemed film festival in my town and many entries would fit the bill And for major films, Pink Flamingoes, Kids, Spike Lee's Katrina films and others have made it big. Just that we don't have the public trough fueling more that would be made if financing were available. |
