Sarvowinner...

Thanks so much for the definition of cricket.

I've been struggling all summer to remember it/trying to search it out.

With two 12 year old boys playing 3 matches a week, plus innumerable practice sessions, I really wanted this definition (having read it some years ago) to try to explain the rules in a joky fashion to new (and totally ignorant!) parents of young wannabe cricketers.

Unfortunately the local U13 league ended in July, so I shall have to save it for next season, when there will be lots of new and ignorant parents to amuse and educate!

And janis....

Thanks for this thread - I've really enjoyed every post on it!

Julia - glad to be of help - I vaguely remembered the definition but was astounded when I was able to google it with just a couple of key words.

AR - here I was trying to help your grammar and you turn on me. I'm hurt. We gracefully let the Pomms win after a drought of 16 yrs - then you call us "muggers, scalliwags and blackguards. Todays gene pool comes from a thorougly bad lot." I'm mortified especially I try to be nice to a Pom everyday.
Didn't you realise that by giving you our ex-pats - Clive James, Germaine Greer, Geoffrey Robertson and Dame Edna we have managed to collectively raise the IQ of both the UK and Australia.

One more dig like that, and we will send Rolf Harris back.

Dame Nellie Melba! Rolf Harris! Men at Work! AC/DC! Rupert Murdoch! Rupert Murdoch! Can you hear us? Can you hear us? Kylie Minogue! Bouncer the Dog! Paul Hogan! Your boys took a hell of a beating!

I rather enjoyed that.

I 've always wanted to do that to a Norwegian, but it gets difficult:
Eric the red, Thor Heyerdahl, Roasld Amundsen, Afred Nobel.......errrr Nogin the Nog ........................ some other Norwegian Bloke Your boys etc etc.

david_west Sep 19th, 2005 03:46 AM

Here’s my go at it:

Alfred Nobel! Henrich Ibsen! The dark haired one out of Abba! Morten Harkett and AHA! The man who invented the cheese slicer*! Quisling! Quisling! Can you hear us? Can you hear us? Dina Jewel**! Grieg and his boring tunes! Tore Andre Flo! Your boys took a hell of a beating.

*According to the internet – so it must be true.

** She’s a Porn Star. I was getting desperate.

It’s completely impossible to do this with New Zealanders.

Would I be blaspheming if I said that it's only a game?

BTW, an Australian friend of mine says that his old mum insists that she wouldn't want to visit Britain because it's where all the convicts came from.

I'm sure you had no idea what you were starting here janis!

Politics, religion, sport..............
one and the same?

When I posted I thought we'd get a lot of Americans giving examples of things they didn't understand in the UK. Instead -- a battle royal between Brits and Aussies.

This has been so much fun. Love it :)

This week's Broadcasting House

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/bh/
had an item about a film about The Ashes as made in Hollywood.

The match had to be against the Germans because the Australians aren't scary enough and of course the hero of the hour was an American.

Oh, like 'Escape to Victory', with Syvestor Stallone saving the day for the Allies 'soccer' team.
