Things we've learned

We've been reading this board for months as we've prepared for our trip to Italy. While we've not asked a lot of questions, we've found that most of what we wanted to know was somewhere on this board. We leave Tuesday for 13 days, starting in Venice ending in Rome. We have very little on our agenda and thanks to you all we think our trip will be smooth and wonderful. From you we learned: that driving in the cities is a hair-raising experience that should never be attempted by Italian neophites; that one should never, under any circumstances eat at McDonalds; that there are zillions of fabulous websites that can help plan an Italian vacation; that trip insurance saves people a lot of hassle and money; that packing light is essential to an easier trip; to not worry about the weather and to learn some of the language. The encouragement to have fun and not be afraid has been essential. We've written down numerous restaurant, bar and hotel references and will hit every open-air market we see. Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences!

Janna & Bruce

I salute you! You are a rare person...one who reads the boards first to see if the question has already been addressed. A lot of folks as the same questions over and over again, never checking to see if it's already been "asked and answered."

Wear a blue ribbon on your lapel while you are there (regrettably, your Tuesday departure does not allow enough time for you to order an "official" logo-based pin from Rex).

If by chance, you encounter another fodorite who identifies you by your ribbon, they will be the lucky ones to meet you - - and maybe learn from you!

Best wishes, for a really great trip!

YKWIA
Another kudos to you for reading and searching on your own!! It sounds like you have indeed learned a lot, and will enjoy your trip that much more as a result. Have a wonderful trip, and be sure to share any new info you pick up with us upon your return.

Janna, what a gracious posting. Bon voyage!
Just one thing, I hereby give you official dispensation to eat at McDonald's if you need to....there've been threads/postings to that effect. If you are rushed and eating at the golden arches saves you time to spend in a museum or elsewhere, then just do it. You can't make every meal a memorable experience....so much to do, so little time.
