Things to do in Porto?

We will be in Porto for three days next month. Several people have commented that they loved Porto and would readily go again but nobody talks much about what to do there. The guide books are mostely quiet about points of interest beyond wine tasting.

We will not have a car, I'm tired of driving on vacations. Any suggestions on things to do while we are there?

Hi Xander2,

We were in Porto for five days in October 2009, and really enjoyed our time there. We were a group of five couples, all old friends.

We did not have cars, and had no trouble getting around, mostly on foot.

Some of the things we did:

Took an orientation bus tour on the first day.

Saw the cathedral, tower, and other "must sdees."

Walked the (very!) high Ponte d'Luis 2 bridge to:

Vila Nova Gaia where we visited the Port wine lodges, including fun tour of Sandeman lodge.

Took the train to Barcelos for the market day.

Took the train up into the Duoro valley.

Took a bus out to the beach for lunch one day.

Enjoyed wandering in the Rebeira area.

We had a great time in Porto, before we took the t4ain to Lisbon for another five days.

Thanks for your reply. It looks like it should be pretty easy to fill up three days.

Can go by bus or train to Braga or Guimaraes or both.

Walking around old town and then across the river is definitely an enjoyable time. Go at an easy pace and stop to eat & drink or simply people watch.

Take a river cruise.

+1 on river cruise. Ideally take the train to Regua and cruise back to Porto, rather than the other way around. An absolutely idyllic way to spend a day.

The HoHo bus is a great way to see things and use to get around.
