Things to do in Frankfurt
 

I am off to Frankfurt next weekend, purely because the flights were so cheap.
We've used Hotwire and have bagged a swanky 5* central Hotel- only problem now is we're not sure all there is to do in the city??

Can anyone suggest any attractions?
Bars (preferably somewhere typically 'German')?
Restaurants?

Any suggestions at all please :)

Visit the applewine pubs in Sachsenhausen (Apfelwein, or 'Appelwoi', or in the Wiesbaden area, 'Äpplä'). One is Dauth-Schneider. Applewine is the typical alcoholic drink in Hessen. The first taste is rough going but you quickly get used to it. It comes in stoneware jugs (a 'Bembel') and you drink it from big ribbed glasses (a 'Geripptes'). I am told by friends from the area that you don't get hangovers from it (don't know how true that is, but they make their own in the basement, so theirs is obviously very pure). Other things to do: visit the Museumsufer, the river bank of museums and art galleries. Seriously good museums there.

I take it you have already done a search on here to read any of my many posts about things to do and see in Frankfurt? You might also want to look on Trip Advisor under Things to do and see in Frankfurt. There are dozens of museums, many of which are located along the river or near the city center. There are several medieval churches in the city center, as well as the Kaiserdom, an Imperial church used for the elections and coronations for the Holy Roman Emperor. One of my favorite sites is the Karmeliter Cloister, with the 500 year old wall paintings done by Jorg Ratgeb.

My favorite restaurants are Dauth Schneider and Atschel. Both are located in old Sachsenhausen.

I enjoyed walking along the river bank from Moselstrasse to the Roemer - this is a typical German activity.
If you have an afternoon flight, you can easily visit the zoo for a pleasant, interesting and flat walking morning.
The Ziel shopping street is a slice of town life in Germany.
There are some restaurants with views there too.

In addition to the other things mentioned, if you like art, you could visit the Stadel Gallery (old masters) and/or Leibighaus (classical sculpture). They are near each other facing the Main, across the river from the Roemer.
