Tentative re-scheduling:
22nd November, 10:00pm-11:30 pm.
place: some kind of fado club in bairro alto or alfama, most likely in bairro alto. I like Caldo Verde, very unpretentious, very family like atmosphere.
Note: this is a mini-LDC, you are allowed to have diner 1st and going to Caldo Verde or similar only to sangria and pestiscos, or then joining Lobo and Loba around some febras grelhadas, and sangria and petiscos, and desserts (mandatory are rice puding, camel spit, saw dust) and coffee.
Budget: around 15 euros for the light version and 25-30 for the whole meal. The show is included.
Emily, do you speak some Portuguese?

lobo_mau Oct 23rd, 2007 09:42 AM

Most likey Jendelia didn't succeed hiding the bill from her husband. I'm realy concerned.

cruisinred Oct 23rd, 2007 11:02 AM

Looks like I will miss the famous LDC as well. We'll be in Lisbon from the 8th-11th.

I've enjoyed reading your inside tips, Lobo and Mau. Obrigada!

lobo_mau Oct 24th, 2007 01:39 AM

Emily and fly, after negotiations with Loba, it's clear we are available on the 22nd, but in the light (after dinner) form. It means you are free to have dinner wherever you like and we'll meet by 10pm.
Cruisinred, a LDC is unlikely, but if you wish to email me, I can give you my coordinates, and we may eventualy meet for a coffee and 10 minutes chating.

Hi Lobo, Matt and Sher!
I haven't been on these message boards for a long time. I'm starting some research for a trip to Paris next spring.
Thought I'd take a look at the "old" board. Loved to see you are all still here making Lisbon and its surrounds so enticing! It brings back such wonderful memories of our fabulous trip, I just wanted to say hi.
So very glad to see the LDC is alive and well!

My wife and I are going to be visiting Lisbon next week for 10 days. We're celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary and are also making this our belated honeymoon, so we decided to treat ourselve to an adventure.

We made the choice to visit Lisbon after friends of ours told us what a wonderful time they had.

I've been doing research for our trip and as a result discovered this forum last week. I must say that there's been a tremendous amount of information in the three threads and after reading the stories here, I'm confident that we've made the right decision.

I'd like to thank everyone before me who contributed to the discussion over the past couple of years. It's really brought Lisbon, where we'll be spending most of our time - we're taking the train to Porto for an overnight visit in the middle of the week, to life.

The tips on what to see, where to eat, to hear fado, to shop... it's such a treasure trove of wonderful suggestions! If it's possible to meet the hosts ot the forum, my wife and I would be honored to share a bite and/or drink with you.

We'll be taking lots of photos and I'll follow up with our tale when we return.

danenright23 Dec 9th, 2007 07:31 AM

it appears the thread is on it's last legs, but here's hoping to get a couple of questions answered.

We're going to be arriving in Lisobon on Saturday afternoon, the 15th and leaving early Sunday morning, the 23rd.

Monday we plan on spending the day exploring Cascais & Estoril.

We'll be spending Wednesday morning through Thursday late afternoon, the 19th & 20th visiting and exploring Porto.

I'd like a recommendation for a place we can have dinner and listen to Fado, on either Tuesday (18th), Thursday (20th) or Friday (21st) evenings, if anyone can help.

My wife and I are also interested in taking the ceramics class at Santa Rufina on Saturday morning, the 22nd.

I'm not able to find a website for them. does anyone know if they'll be offering classes and if so, whether we need to make reservations before we leave, or as soon as we arrive, to get space?

For fado, you can try Caldo Verde, in the Bairro Alto, at Travessa Poco da Cidade, 40. My husband and I went there with Lobo and Loba and had a very enjoyable evening. It is a low key place with food and drink, and several people singing fado, including volunteers from the audience. Relatively small, so you might want reservations, especially on the weekends. When we showed up on a Friday night in August, they were full (but they squeezed in a table for us rather than make us wait too long). The phone number is 213 422 091 or 966 125 358.

Thank you very much for the advice. This is exactly the kind of place I was looking for.

To the Lisbon experts.
TRAIN INFORMATION PLEASE

I am corresponding with someone who is taking the train from Lisbon to Portimao. Can someone give accurate information since he is having a difficult time getting up to date, information as to:

1. Correct station name for train to Portimao.

2. Does this involve a transfer of trains at TUNES?

3. What is the name of this train and what station would he get off at in Portimao?

4. Does the train run on Saturday.

5. What is the name of the station he would get off at in Portimao (he is going to Porches).

6. Where would he get this information.

Thanks.

lobo_mau Feb 6th, 2008 06:18 AM

1. Correct station name for train to Portimao is Portimao

2. Does this involve a transfer of trains at TUNES? Yes

3. What is the name of this train and what station would he get off at in Portimao? Portimao... The name of the train I don't know, since we've never been formally introduced. The name of the station is again Portimao.

4. Does the train run on Saturday.
The answer is yes.

5. What is the name of the station he would get off at in Portimao (he is going to Porches). Portimao. I guess there should be taxis available and he must pick up the 1st in the line

6. Where would he get this information. www.cp.pt

Additional info:
From Lisboa-Entrecampos he has trains departing by 8:51, 10:30, 13:30, 17:30. 18:51, arriving at 12:14, 14:45, 17:36. 21:32, 22:09 respectively.
The cost is 17 up to 24.50 euros for the 1st section and 2.08 to the Tunes/Portimao section.

Is the Lisbon Dining Club still extant?

Is it reasonable to think we could take a taxi from Avenida de la Libertad to Jeronimos monastery, see it and return in a morning?

Sher May 3rd, 2008 05:32 AM

LVSue. I don't think the LDC is as active as it once was but if you are lucky you can catch the guys once in a while if the moon and stars are aligned.

When will you be there?

lobo_mau May 3rd, 2008 07:36 AM

J'y suis, j'y reste.
Both Matt and I embarqued in different projects, making our time short, but if somebody invites me for a drink it's unlikely that the received answer is no.
PS: LDC is meeting again in 1 month for a very special session

Matt_from_England May 7th, 2008 09:13 AM

I hope I'm invited...

lobo_mau May 7th, 2008 01:44 PM

No LDCs are possible without you. The most convenient for us is the 1st Saturday of June, because on Friday I'm busy with Mr. Carl Rogers :-)
What about exchanging details by private mail?
