Things to do around Edinburgh
 

We arrive in Edinburgh tomorrow at about 5:00PM. The original plan was to spend one night in Edinburgh and then rent a car and head northwest to Dunblane to explore some historical areas, distilleries and visit Roslynn chapel the next day. we have a flight out to Oslo at about 10:00 PM that day. I am thinking it might be better to just stay both nights in Edinburgh and then go on a road trip for the day before heading to the airport around 7:30 to 8:00PM. Any suggestions. Our big focus is History and scenery.

Sorry but with such a short trip and so much to see IN Edinburgh, it doesn't make much sense to me to try to squeeze in a trip out of the city, especially by car. Just too much faffing about. And why Dunblane in particular?

The Edinburgh Castle has lots of history. I'd read that a couple of hours is a typical visit and I stayed from opening to mid-afternoon (I did eat lunch at one of the cafes).

a Church where the history learning is outside and free .. Greyfriars Kirkyard .. informational signs to learn about the signing of the National Covenant, and one corner has an entrance to the area that was used as an open air prison for several months; many died

Thanks for the suggestions. The only reason we considered Dunblane was to see a little countryside and I had a good deal at the Double Tree in Dunblane but I tend to agree that more time is needed in Edinburgh as it is our first visit to Scotland. On first visits we tend to just hit the highlights and then return for extended stays on future trips to places that have more than expected. I really had an interest in Rosslyn chapel which I understand is pretty close but would be best to do in a car.
