I've always found this forum very informative and most people very kind and helpful. If someone answers me with a rude ignorant answer, I just ignore it, the good people far out weigh the bad ones! Not everyone in this life is going to be nice to you, people are going to be rude and impolite and nasty, therefore I appreciate the nicer people all the more when I come across them.

I personally enjoy reading the posts from people who have been answered with information that didn't agree with what they were thinking so they decide that answer is "rude."
Sometimes the truth hurts and as to answers being "authoritative" well, do you come here for "answers" that might be wrong????

1. There's not much point in really obvious links (wikipedia & such), but there are also some that aren't readily apparant from a google search (say, bahn.de, railsaver.com, & skyscanner.net) that are extremely useful for travellers
2. A lot of people know how to use the search bar, but not everybody notices, plus the Fodor's search kind of sucks (hard to narrow down, no option to only search titles, etc). Those sort of replies should definitely be limited, but a kind suggestion to look at what has been posted before, especially for some of the really common inquiries, is a lot easier than retyping everything all the time.
3. If there wasn't any social aspect, this would just be a job as a travel consultant, for no pay, which I don't think is what most people are here for. Of course, things that go way off topic or prevent legitimate questions from being answered should be avoided as much as possible. And I wouldn't say your post is of no value, it's always good to look at what things can be improved.

I love the links, at least the good ones, as they can provide excellent information in more detail and images as well. The ones I find particularly useful I bookmark into my "Favorites" folder.
I don't mind socializing posts. What I do mind are the people who use questions as a chance to lecture the OP in posts dripping with acid. Or when non-American posters constantly toss in gratuitous anti-American cracks even when they're totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand. OTOH, I also get annoyed at some American posters who think that by putting down their fellow citizens they'll appear more "worldly." Those craven gestures of self-loathing won't score you any points with the supercilious anti-American Brit/Eurocrowd. Ever.
When an OP asks for opinions about specific hotels or restaurants AND (!)gives the reasons why they've restricted themselves to those choices, it would be nice if the responses did NOT ignore the original choices *completely* in order to plug something completely different! If the OP makes the question open-ended, asking for alternatives, fine, of course make suggestions. Otherwise, at least try to keep the OP's original question in mind.

I also love the links that are provided. Just a few days ago I posted about getting from Athens to Cairo. Sure, I know how to research on the internet but I was going nowhere. I posted here and got links from several airlines that did not come up on my search, as well as some great opinions. Those links were extremely helpful.
I wish people would utilize the search feature here more often. I understand wanting a personal response, but it seems like there are posts everyday asking about recommendations for hotels in Rome or Paris. To be honest I just quite answering most of them because I was tired of posting the same answers over and over again.

I do and I don't agree with the OP.
Links, by themselves, are rarely an adequate or complete answer. Dekoder is right in saying that the great value of this board is that it is NOT the same thing as web search. But a link can usually provide valuable supporting detail to accompany a brief text response. That, I think, works best.
As far as point 3 is concerned, however...this is not a strictly utilitarian board. It is a community, made up of personalities. IMHO, a little socializing and friendly banter is a healthy thing for any community...even (or especially) an online one.
