The wine train
 

Can anyone comment on the "Wine Train" outside of Geneva?

I have read a few posts mentioning this, but I cannot find a lot of detail. Sounds fun, do they actually serve wine and cheese, stopping at towns with vineyards nearby, or is this train just a regular train for a sightseeing excursion as you pass through the wine country?

You may be thinking of the Chocolate Train that goes from Lausanne up thru the vineyards to Gruyeres where they visit a cheese factory and the walled old town before the train goes to Broc and the Nestle chocolate factory for tasting. There may be a wine train but it's not, i think, one of the several branded Swiss specialty trains like the Golden Pass, Glacier Express, Bernina Express, William Tell, etc.

No, the "Wine Train" is entirely different from the Chocolate Train from Montreux to Gruyeres & Broc.

The "Wine Train" isn't much except a train that leaves from Vevey and goes to Chexbres in the Corniche Lavaux (I think I already gave you the link to my review of the Lavaux). It's just about a 15-minute ride, and, no, unfortunately no wine & cheese on board! There's no special designation except in the height of summer, when once I saw a special quai at the Vevey train station reserved for the "Train des Vignes."

Don't go all the way to Puidoux, as I found that part of the walk less scenic (one side is all warehouses). From Chexbres, you just head downhill toward the lake, and you'll go through the vineyards and local caves.

Make your own wine train! You are allowed to have and drink (in moderation) wine on many trains in Europe. Find one you like, get a few cheeses suggested to you (not the smelly kind, though. . . be nice to teh other passengers) and off you go!
