The "Windsor Eye"
 

If you liked the London Eye and you're planning a trip to Windsor this summer, you might enjoy taking a spin on the Royal Windsor Wheel. The ride costs £6 per adult; £5 for kids under 16; and gives you a view of the castle, the Thames and the town. It runs until September 3.

That sound like an even nicer ride than the London Eye. Too bad they didn't have it last year when I was in Windsor.

We are planning on going to Windsor castle in August in the morning .What time should we book the wheel for?
Shoudl we do it before we tour the castle or after?

BTilke: Have you actually seen the wheel? I'm a bit confused. The map/satellite view they provide shows it located sort of behind The Arches, semi-on top of the tracks and the Alma Rd car park (that I always get stuck in when the big car park is full)

Do they just have the arrow in the wrong place and the wheel is actually in the park?

Janis, no, I haven't seen it, there was an article about it in yesterday's Maidenhead Express. We probably will go check it out, but not until after this heat wave breaks!

Melissa, sorry, didn't mean to overlook your question. I would do the castle first, then lunch, then a stroll through town, then the Wheel, and then home. If you are two adults and two kids, booking a private compartment isn't that much more expensive than paying for each person.

If we visit the castle from 9-11 then a stroll and lunch,would you say that 1pm is a good time to book the eye.We want to get back into london with time to go to the imperial war rooms that afternoon.

Melissa: The castle opens at 9:45 and you won't be inside until about 10:00 (after queueing and security) Count on about 3 hours in the castle/grounds/Chapel. By the time you visit the castle, walk around Windsor, ride the Eye, and take the train back to London it will be quite late in the afternoon. The IWM closes at 6:00 p.m. and you will want a couple of hours for it.

So I should find another day to visit the imperial war rooms?

Then I will book the eye for 3PM.

Does that make for a easier day?

Yes - much. You don't want to rush through either the castle or the Imperial War Museum. 2:30-3:00 p.m-ish sounds about right for the Windsor Eye. If this is is the same day as one of the late nights at the British, V&A, National Gallery, etc - you could probably fit in a evening visit to one of those to free up time another day for the IWM.

By the way, the famous Crooked House tea room close by Windsor Castle is now open week-end evenings for dinner (bring your own wine, corkage is only £2) and is reported to be serving excellent food (we haven't done this yet but friends have), if you decide to stay in town for an early dinner.
