The Third Man

We will be in Vienna Aug. 18th-22nd and have never seen The Third Man. Is there somewhere to see to movie while we are actually in Vienna? Thanks for the help.

I can't help you about finding the movie in Vienna, but when I was there I bought a copy of the book by Graham Greene, which is basically identical with the movie.

Usually I enjoy a book more than the movie made from it, but in this case, I thought the movie was better. More atmospheric.

I bought the videotape on Amazon.

I don 't know about seeing in Vienna , but it is a terrific film.
After seeing the movie , go to the Prater and take the ferris wheel ride!

We were in Vienna last November and learned that there is The Third Man Tour. I think the tour includes being driven in a small van to places seen in the movie. Unfortunately our stay in Vienna did not allow time for this tour but we did find the stone steps that were in the movie.

Here's a site with the Third Man walk.

I'm sure you could get a copy of the movie from your library.

Or from Netflix.

This movie theater shows The Third Man in the original version several times per week, all year long. Maybe you should inquire by e-mail if they will have one show during your stay.

One of my all-time favourite movies, we recently got the Studio/Canal DVD version, which comes with 'special features'.

This film is a masterpiece, and perhaps best of all shows Vienna as it was in the post-war reconstruction period. Do try to see it before you go, you'll enjoy Vienna so much more. (Not that you won't enjoy Vienna either way!)

anne,

I do hope you succeed in your attempt to see "The Third Man," one of the truly great cinematic works of art.

While in Vienna, ask your hotel if there's a kind of "What's On" publication, which may well have listings for movie revival houses.

As an alternative, obtain the DVD from your local library (scold the librarian if she claims the library doesn't carry it), and enjoy the dark, long, sinister shadows of post-war Vienna. Enjoy that sad and lonely final shot, too.

If you do get a chance to see the movie before you go to Vienna, you might be interested in these websites about the film locations in Vienna:
