The Sale at Harrods - When?
When does The Sale start at Harrods? How long does it last and if you're not there on the opening day, is it worth going to?

Thanks.

Dear Toni: As a traveler who was usually bound by an academic schedule, I always found the Harrod's sale started about a week after most of the tourists have to leave. My sister (who lives in London) sometimes goes but not always. Since the al-Fayed family took over the store it's not quite the same. Other shops such as Liberty's have equally good sales and continental shoppers make a bee-line for them. I suppose that if you're there and have never done it, it would be worth the experience; but you might get trampled. Good luck! Joan

I don't know for sure but I think it starts
the second week in Jan --I remember
for a funny reason because they always
get a celebrity to open it and last year
it was Cher and she had to leave before
she could do it because of Sonny
Bono's death on Jan 5th or 6th.
I personally can't imagine why a dept
store sale would seem special to
anyone unless you live in a small town
and don't get to shop in decent stores.
It's just a std. dept. store sale and things in
England cost much more than in the US
anyway (if you're American) so you won't
save anything. Also, English mainstream
clothing is not very stylish and often
quite ugly (IMHO--take a look at the
queen and Camilla, ha, ha).
I've been to many big sales in
Europe, both London and Paris
(which are in July) and there are no
great deals and large dept stores are
not very "ethnic" nowadays anyway, so
you can likely buy the same stuff in US
(which will come from some 3rd world
country). It's a global economy. If you
are looking for British specialties
(ie Scottish cashmere) you can likely
get it cheaper in US through various
sources. Oh, I think sale goes to end
of January.
I agree with Christina. harrod's is expensive. just go there to look around but there are no deals. I was there last year and I believe the "sale ' runs through January. But there are much better prices over here than in London with the exchange rate and the 18%v.a.t.
We just got back from London. I don't know exactly when the sale at Harrods begins, but don't expect too much of it. Prices at Harrods are exorbitant, as well for toys, clothes, foods ... even to use the toilet, called "luxury bathroom", for which they ask 1 £ !!!
