The Romantic Road
 

Just need a little help with this - I have a trip planned in Oct. - First stop Ireland to see family - and we have five extra nights to spend in Germany.Direct flight to Munich - planned three nights there
and two nights in Rothenburg - make
it to Frankfurt to catch a train to
Amsterdam where we depart from.Should we spend more time on the Romantic Road route and cut a day in Munich? We will be driving from Munich to Rothenburg - is this the best way to get there? Any and all advice is welcome - sorry this was so long

I wouldn't. Rothenburg is definitely worth one or two nights, but Munich is worth at least three. Get from Munich to Rothenburg as expeditously as possible. Nördlingen is nice, but a little out of your way.

The direct trains from Frankfurt main station to Amsterdam also call at FRA Airport station.
It would be easier to drop off your rental car there at the airport than to drive into downtown Frankfurt to the main station.

I agree with Larry.
Not that much to see on the R Road, other than Rothenburg.

As far as getting from Munich to Rothenburg...you might want to consider spending some hours in Nurmburg.

If you have a car, a good overview of thr Romantic Road is to spend one night in Rhotenburg. See Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen and Wurtzburg.

In Rhotenburg, take the nightwatchman's tour. Take a walk along the wall and toward the park in the morning before the crowds arrive.

In the other RR towns mentioned. Stop at the TI and ask them to suggest the best sights for a few hours.

Unless you really love driving slow to see the scenery, you can drive on the autobahn between the towns rather than on the RR itself.

I heartily disagree with ekellyga. Seeing all the places along the Romantic Road that are worth seeing would take at least a week. With such a short trip as the OP's, though, it's better to stick to just one place.

That is a good plan, however, if you want to see a bit of Oberammergau and the Wies Kirche (both recommended), it will be a very long day.

We stopped for the night in Mindelheim before going on to RodT.

I would stick with the three nights in Munich, 2 in Rothenburg. I think there are a number of interesting desitinations on the Romantic Road between the two. I personally like Nördlingen more than Dinkelsbuhl. Schloss Harburg also makes a nice stop

the Romantic road itself isn't especially nice/scenic. It just links a lot of interesting places.

My husband and I enjoyed exploring the art of Tilman Reimenshneider, an amazing sculptor and woodcarver. Be sure to see at least his Holy Blood altar in Rothenburg

I'd allow 2 nights for Rothenburg also. It's touristy yet a beautiful town. Especially in the evening. The Nightwatchman's tour was the highlight for us.

Dinkelsbuhl is also worth a short stop, especially if you're going to be passing by it anyway.

If your interested, there is another outstanding wood carved alter by Tilman Reimenshneider (besides the one in St. Jacobs in Rothernburg) about 1 mile south of Creglingen in the Herrgottskirche (a little north of Rothenburg).

I think everyone is telling you the same thing: Do Munich then do two nights in Rothenburg. The drive from Rothenburg to Frankfurt is not bad. I have been going into and out of Germany since 1970 and have never been to downtown Frankfurt so have no advice for that area.

ROTHENBURG: Definitely do the Nightwatchman's tour. He does a great job. The English tour will leave from the main square at 8pm.

We enjoy staying at MARKUSTURM HOTEL OR REICHS KUCHENMEISTER. Wherever you stay be sure to make it within the walls of the city. Much more convenient for walking around the town.

HELL is a unique restaurant. It is near the Criminal Museum and built in an old forge. Not expensive, but quaint. Usually not too many first time tourists there as it is off the beaten track.....until the nightwatchman shows it to you.

The restaurant at the Reichs Kuchenmeister is also good. If weather permits you can eat on the patio outdoors.
