The Port of Naxos
 

Does anyone know if there is anywhere that is close to the port of Naxos to go for a couple of hours? Either for lunch or any close sights? Thanks

You can see the extensive archaelogical ruins in Taormina itself, you could go to Castelmola, or you could do a tour that includes Mt. Etna. All these are quite easily accessible from the port at Naxos. The railroad around Etna is in Catania. If you rent a car, you could easily get to any of the places outside of town; or you can arrange a tour right in Taormina when you get off the ship.

Are you talking about the Greek island of Naxos or Taormina in Sicily?

If you're talking about the Greek island of Naxos the port is right in the center of town so you won't have far to walk to do some exploration, have a meal, do some shopping.

Yes I am talking about the Greek Island of Naxos and thank you for all the great advice. It is exactly what I needed! Do you know if you really have to be in line one hour before a ferry departs or is it ok to go closer to departure time?

Haleyjoy, if you get there an hour before departure, you will be there even before the ferry arrives. Getting to the port 30 min before departure should be enough. There is a long row of shops and restaurants around the port, but the best shopping in Naxos is in the old town just behind it. There is a maze of little passageways just below the kastro (castle) with all sorts of fascinating shops.

You may need somewhere to leave your luggage while walking around, though. If memory serves, there is a place to check your luggage near the bus station, which is next to the ferry docks. If not, ask at one of the ticket agents.

I lived on Naxos for a few years in the 1950s. We would walk often to what we called The Temple of Ariadine. It's very close to the port. You'll be able to see it and do please take the short walk to see it and think of the opera Ariadine auf Naxos. After it would be pleasant to walk up to the castle if you have time. If not find a coffee house right on the main street and watch the world go by. I wonder if they still have cattle being loaded on boats to other islands. It's a beautiful little port and I hope you enjoy it.

The port is central to and one of the most interesting parts of the town. With two hours you will be able to explore much of it. This is on a pretty small scale as you will see upon arrival. Walking will get you about easily and there are also taxis. Very nice shops and lots of good opportunities for an inexpensive lunch. Enjoy your visit.
