The perfect city to live in?

Just for fun:

The perfect city to live in should have a comfortable climate, an active cultural life, impressive architecture and city center, beaches and skiing within reach.

My first nomination would be Barcelona. A bustling metropolis with beaches and skiing within an hour's drive. A major sporting city as well.

Any other possible candidates?

Although I love Barcelona, IMO high humidity does not a "comfortable climate" make.

Portland? No I don't think so- lousy weather year round (I should know I lived there for 4 years). Beaches - yes but you really can't swim there.
Maybe San Francisco- although it suffers the same problem with its beaches, it does score high in the other areas. 3 hours to the slopes, great sporting venues, architecture, culture, no extremes in weather.

Lousy weather year round? Please. I lived there for years, too, and we had absolutely glorious summers, winters that were easy to deal with, excellent skiing an easy drive away, and the beaches were beautiful, even if you couldn't swim in them (which makes them less crowded, except at Seaside).
That "lousy weather year round" is an old chestnut the Oregonians like to trot out to keep even more people from moving to the state.
I telecommuted to a job on the East Coast and got many extra vacation days by calling in to find out the offices were closed due to ice and snow. While my colleagues were shoveling out their cars, I was enjoying coffee in balmy weather on NW 23rd.

When we moved to Portland the natives were fond of saying there are 2 seasons in Portland- August and winter!!!!
Really it rains way way too much and the sun is an endangered species. I have lived on the east coast, west coast and now the gulf coast- no place has less sunshine than Portland-its far too gloomy most of the year- damp and wet, and often cold. I now live in Houston- but Houston is no candidate either- way way too hot and humid and no mountains to speak of. I'd still vote for SF but I agree Sydney would give it a run for the money as well- I could not find any negatives with Sydney except the lack of access to the snow.

Sounds like San Francisco to me.

Cols water beaches are superior to those with warm water because you don't even have to pretend you want to go swimming.

Which is why I prefer Maine to Cape Cod, too.

Sidney could be gold plated it wouldn't matter because of the spiders and snakes.

That the world's most dangerous spider not only lives there but is also named after the city means that any sane individual will stay at least 10.000km away.

I would pick Bologna or Rome. But I don't think that skiing is as important, I guess. (and hey, what does 'within reach' really mean?

Yes. The Sidney Funnel Web spider. Probably the most dangerous spider in the world.

A map showing in what neighbourhoods you can find them in Sidney:

http://amonline.net.au/spiders/dange...opups/map3.htm

So Sidney is off.

I haven't been there, but based on everything I've read, and given your criteria, I nominate Montpelier, France.

It's one of the places on my very long "wish list".

karlth,
After reading about the funnel spider and all the other things that can kill ya in the book In A Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson; it's just amazing that Australia has such a hale and hearty population.

Not necessarily.

What about restaurants and food?

Oh, did I mention that out of the top ten most dangerous snakes in the world Australia has six of them!!! Not all in Sydney of course, so it could be safe to visit us in Sydney (please note the Y and not I) - if you are brave!! Due to the dangerous creatures I have only lost one arm, some toes, a foot has dropped off last week but apart from that I love living here!!!! You learn to knock your shoes about before you put them on in the morning!!
