The Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro and Transportation issues

Hello,

We are considering staying in Montenegro for 4 nights with Kotor being our base. We plan on seeing Budva/Sveti Stefan, Bar and Budva. We would consider staying an extra night to see the Ostrog Monastery but we aren't seeing very practical public transport to the site. We would welcome any advice on whether this will be a possible (and worth while excursion). We will not be renting a car and will be sticking to bus and hiking.
We've heard we can get the Niksic - Podigorica bus and get off half way then hike to the monastery - but it still sounds a bit too far out to make it practical to get back to a hotel for the night. Then there is the fact that we are coming from Kotor and then would be moving on to Dubrovnik.

Thoughts?

THanks
Naxos

There are local travel agentīs stands all over Budvaīs beach boulevard. They advertise all kinds of trips, Ostrog being one of them. You pay to the stand, and the bus collects you from a bus stop that is nearest to your hotel.

When you see the road that leads to the monastery, you understand why there is no public transportation:) Not just any guy can drive that, A very memorable experience.

Hi Elina, thanks very much - an organized day trip seems an excellent way to visit this site. I've heard several hair-raising things about the road. Did you feel safe? I saw one posting where the bus passangers were asked to leave the bus and walk a distance so as to not endanger the whole bus (just the driver) - this would suite me fine being the control freak I am -lol! Also once the bus drops us off, do you know how far of a hike it is?

Thanks again,

Naxos

That was me.

And no, I didnīt feel safe. But I would not have missed it.

I suspect that the biggest thing to blame was the size of the bus. It was a full-sized big bus. A kleinbus type perhaps woud have felt better, but it was in the middle of summer, and there were too many people for a smaller car. And we were staying in Budva which has more tourists than a typical day trip destination Kotor. Maybe you can get a smaller bus from Kotor.

I remember there was an upward hike, but I really donīt remember how long it was. Apparently nothing significant, otherwise I would remember. There are two cafes (toilets!) where the bus leaves you.
