The Northern Lights...Best time to go?

Hi all, this question is born more out of curiosity than anything else. When is the best time of year to view the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights and where exactly in Finland would you go to see them?

This question was posed previously but I can't find the specific thread. Try searching for "Northern Lights" and there are a bunch of posts about this information.

I'm certain you're going to find a treasure of answers to your request.

I could tell you this or that but there's a lot of information on these posts. It will be worth checking it out yourself.

Thanks Blackduff - you're absolutely right - I apologise I should have checked their first.

Some answers there that surprised me - I didn't realise they could be seen so far and wide.

I have recently bought a book entitled '1001 Natural Wonders You must see before you die'.

They are something I would like to see - but it does sound a bit 'iffy' doesn't it?

I've seen them in Canada (Newfoundland to be exact)..I'm not sure I agree you have to see them "before you die" and I suppose they might be more easily seen in Finland but if I were over there I'd settle for seeing St. Petersburg in Russia as a decent substitute.

Good luck.

< Best time to go? >

When you have dark skies - ie winter.

After that there are no guarantees on seeing the Northern Lights even if you spend several weeks in a place that's "good" for them.

Place - as far north as poss, away from city lights.
Time - wait for predicted sunspot maxima
Doesn't have to be winter
