The nitty gritty about Coach on Lufthansa
 

Hey everyone...

I am happy for my friend, however, depressed for myself. My friend has a generous boss who GAVE her enough miles to fly Business on our flight to Italy.

My hubby and I, along with our two kids will be back in the sardine can.

I need the good/bad/ugly on coach transatlantic Lufthansa flights. I've been on spacious coach, and also HELLISH coach. Please tell me Lufthansa's coach is one of the better ones?????????????

We flew Lufthansa from PHL to France, via Frankfort, which is like going from PHL to Chicago, via Denver.

It was fine. I got a window seat for the ride over. The bathrooms were in badly need of a cleaning by the end of the flight (both times). They feed you a LOT! I am used to USAir, where you are very fortunate if you get pretzels. In coach, those F/As brought a meal, drinks and then we had Baileys! (Included).

I tried to be clever and request a seat change so I didn't have to sit in the center on the way back. The clerk told me I had an empty seat next to me, but I did not - I guess they filled the seat after I checked in. I was stuck in the 2nd last row of the plane next to a man who was unfamilar with deodorant, and in front of an elderly gentlemen who tried to cough up his lung the entire flight. But - the other seat was occupied by a cute man - and I never get to sit by the cute guys - my typical seatmates are usually the other two guys I described!

I hope we don't get in the back. We had the 2nd to the back row on AirCanada to Paris, and it was a nightmare. Some gross guy fell asleep and FELL on my 4 1/2 year old. I ripped her out of the seat and then he TOOK HER SEAT COMPLETELY!
They didn't feed us so well on AC, so it's nice to hear about Luft.

Lufthansa coach is quite good and the service is good as well, compared to US carriers they are a step above...you'll enjoy your flights even cattle car seats.

Does LH have individual entertainment screens?

We flew home from Athens on Lufthansa. I was in business (on hubby's points) and he was in coach (employer-paid ticket, not upgradeable).
Coach was no different from any other carrier's coach. He was crammed in like everyone else but accepting of his fate!
But on the leg from Frankfurt to Vancouver, he got sick - fever, shaking, etc. and was pretty miserable all the way home. And I felt soooo guilty sitting up front in great comfort. I had asked if we could trade seats and was told "NO WAY!!". He was not even allowed to come up and say hello to me. When we got off the plane he was the last one to exit and was shaking and disoriented with his fever. The poor guy.

I hope you folks have an easier flight!!

Taggie: That's not humane or good public relations. I am not impressed. I would send the airline a letter of complaint.

I usually fly Lufthansa excusively to Europe. I have used them trans-con and domestic in Europe.

The trans-con flights are usually very good. Flight attendants aren't usually very friendly but they are always professional. Seating is decent but tight in coach. When you check in try to get a bulkhead or exit row.

Food is decent and you get plenty, but it is airline food so don't expect a gourmet treat. It usually a meat and a pasta dish.

As far as I know Lufthansa doesnt have individual videos in seat backs. I usually fly from Newark to Frankfurt and have done the LA/Frankfurt trip a few times too, but I never remember individual screens.

One good thing about Lufthansa is that they are prompt and very good at making ontime departures.

annetti, I know, it's terrible. But I was told by steward that the cabin staff could lose their jobs if we traded, that too many Air Canada (Lufthansa partner) passengers had asked for upgrades and a big fuss would be raised if people saw something suspicious.
I thought this was very, umm, rigid of them, but have since been told, on here, that there was nothing wrong with the way we were treated.
So I will never fly with them again if I can help it!

Taggie: I would still post a letter of complaint. I guess their come-back would be that they did not want to infect their higher paying customers. It is not right to put a sick person in such an uncomfortable situation, especially since you were willing to trade seats. I don't blame you for not wanting to fly Luftansa, but I bet that experience could have happened on any airline.

I don't understand the airlines rules about people switching seats. If a couple buys two tickets, what difference does it make which one sits in which seat?

For individual entertainment screens, that entirely depends on the type of aircraft, and that is true with all airlines....its more the aircraft vs. the airline.

There are no airline rules regarding who sits in what seat....you buy a ticket, reserve a seat and get your boarding pass for that seat...however should you choose to sit somewhere else cooperatively with another passenger the airline couldn't care less. We've quite often switched seats in flight not only amongst ourselves but with other passengers as well. As long as you aren't trying to swap a window or an aisle with a middle seat you're usually good to go!
