The "Night Wolves" plan on being in Berlin in May.

I wonder what the chances are that they will actually get through Poland and further, that they will get to Berlin.

I sense some big trouble brewing if they make it to Berlin.

hetismij2 Apr 28th, 2015 12:24 PM

So far they have been turned back by Poland. It will be interesting to see how it develops.
I do think Russia should be represented in Berlin in May, but not by a motorcycle gang.

Background please!

Pegontheroad Apr 28th, 2015 12:36 PM

If, I understand you, Pal, you want to know that the Night Wolves are.

They are that group of right wing motorcyclists who want to go through Poland to Berlin for the 70th anniversary of the fall of Berlin. They are a Putin-approved group. He has even ridden with them.

PalenQ Apr 28th, 2015 01:33 PM

Thanks - maybe Putin will be on the back of one of the cycles! Actually this is the first I've heard of this and if anyone has the right to be there it is the Russian head of state as Berlin only fell because of the Soviet army. Keep us posted about the celebrations.

I don't think it is the fall of Berlin that is upsetting the Poles, it's what happened afterwards. There was a piece about this on NPR this afternoon. See: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32452276

The Night Wolves also drove through Ukraine to Crimea to provide "support" for the Russian backed rebels.
Putin rides a Harley(!) with them. The Russian version of the Hells Angels, but without the front of do-gooding.

Pegontheroad Apr 28th, 2015 02:01 PM

Thursdaysd: Absolutely. The Nazis were vicious, but they oppressed and killed the Poles for only five/six years. The Russians oppressed them for 45 years.

I suspect that if these Russian right wing thugs ever get to Berlin, they will be greeted by a larger group of German right wing thugs.

Germany canceled the visas for the Night Wolves and transmitted the information to Poland.

The Polish border guards stopped the bikers and kept them for a couple of hours busy with interrogation and searching.

End of story. Schengen worked.

bilboburgler Apr 28th, 2015 11:11 PM

"End of story. Schengen worked." hard to believe but wow. :-)

hetismij2 Apr 30th, 2015 11:51 AM

They are now in the Czech republic apparently, according to a Dutch news site, so Schengen hasn't worked.
No surprise there.

PalenQ Apr 30th, 2015 02:07 PM

Wonder if Schengen would keep Putin out - don't know if he is coming but again it would be a disgrace if the President of the country most responsible for liberating Berlin in 1945 were not there - not wishing he were and yes he may not be popular for the aftermath of East Berlin and the DDR but hey you have to honor the country that basically liberated Berlin and with the death of thousands of troops - I trekked out to the Soviet Memorial near Treptower Park once and it the immense monument was sadly overgrown with weeds - now I guess all gussied up as it IMO should be in light of what the Soviets did:

The Red Army has a lot to say sorry for during that time

While their actions in Warsaw were unbelievable.

Schengen is a disgrace

The Night Wolves CLAIM in their own BLOG that they made it somehow to the Czech city of Ostrava.
Local police was not able to find any evidence for that, say the papers.
So there is no evidence, yet.
As their purpose is to make a visible statement - probably also for all the good their beloved strong Leader is bringing to the world - one can assume that they cannot stay in hiding. But as soon as they become visible they will be arrested as illegal aliens. Pretty simple.
Most people who are not familiar with the Schengen system assume that it has only abolished the checkpoints. While in fact it has increased the competencies of the police to stop and check ID of anyone traveling anywhere in the Schengen zone. And motorcycles with Russian plates are not that common on German freeways.

Cowboy, very true, I've been pulled over twice (Germany and Austria) and I don't drive on the continent often

PalenQ May 1st, 2015 05:48 AM

I've seen regular traffic stops by French Customs agents in Orleans - well away from any border - a local newspaper article said that things like vans from Holland with an NL on it were regularly stopped and given the once over by drug dogs - Schengen don't mean you can't be stopped by Customs or Immigration once over the external borders.
