The Most Interesting Churches in Naples and Palermo
Hey,
I was wondering if you guys could share which church you like the most in Naples and Palermo. Thanks. |
It's in a suburb of Palermo, but the Duomo in Monreale is the most stunning. In Palermo itself, la Martorana is a small jewel. Or, for over-the-top Baroque, one of the oratories: Santa Cita or del Rosario. The Cattedrale, on the other hand, is missable.

Hi Castellanese,
Here's a link to a listing and description of CHurches in Napoli (it's in English), You can browse them and will surely see some that interest you. http://www.culturacampania.rai.it/si...tage/Churches/ |
BTW, I second Monreale for Palermo as the Must See.
|
Palermo also has a church with a macabre collection of mummies, old bodies, bones, skulls, etc.

Hi Castellanese -
The Duomo in Monreale is truly amazing. Of the churches in Palermo itself, I'd add San Cataldo to those already mentioned. In Naples, my favorite was the Duomo. Others I especially enjoyed included the cloister of Santa Chiara, Sansevero, and a brief stop for the Caravaggio at Misericordia. Enjoy! |
In Naples, Cappella Sansevero, not for the church itself, but because it houses three of the most technically marvelous sculptures I've ever seen, including a veiled christ, a man wrapped in a net, and a girl with a shear dress.
Monreale is the highlight just outside Palermo -- an easy bus ride from Palermo. |
Hi guys,
From what I've read on this forum and in bookguides, the Duomo and the Capella San Severo are highlights in Naples and the Monreale Cathedral and the Martorana are highlights in Palermo. Thanks. |
