The most centrally located hotel in bavaria?

We are planning on spending 7 days/6 nights in bavaria in August. We will be traveling with a 17 month old, so we don't want to move around too much. Is there one hotel/town that is centrally located enough for us to do day trips to explore all areas. I especially want to spend a bit of time in Salzburg (at least 2 days). Or, would it be better to break the trip up to spend several days in western bavaria and eastern bavaria?

We will not need to go to Munich as we will be there the previous week.

Thank you for your suggestions.

It is too far to see the Salzburg area from the Bavaria castle country---you need 2 base camps. I would pick Oberammergau for Bavaria and St. Gilgen for the Salzburg area and split the time.

Bob,

Sorry to be dense, but are these hotels or towns that you are recommending? If they are towns, do have any specific hotel recommendations?

Thank you.

They are towns but I have not stayed in either so I don't know of any hotels to recommend.
If you are going to be visiting the Romantic Road part of Bavaria then I would suggest staying in either Rothenburg ob der Tauber (we LOVE Gasthof Greifen - hotel) or Dinklesburg.

You don't say HOW you will be "moving around." If you rent a car, it will be much easier than taking public transport. Also, taking public transport simply requires more time and limits you to predetermined destinations. Doing day trips to "explore all areas" as you stated leads me to hope you will be renting a car. Otherwise, any of these explorations can become much more difficult, especially with a young 'un.

Two full days in Salzburg will probably require 3 nights there. There goes half of your time. If that is your plan, then you should probably pick one destination other than Salzburg that is really in Bavaria. I don't know whether you want to wander around, or visit some of Ludwig's castles, but you will have the remaining 3 nights to do it. So I would think something around Garmisch, Fussen, or Mittenwald would be a good location. Good luck.

Sorry, we will be driving around. I think at this point we will probably try and stay in one place for 3 nights and another location near Salzburg for another 3 nights.

Check out the lodging reviews at www.bensbauernhof.com. Ben is well-known on this site and even posts here. Get our your map of Bavaria and enjoy the planning!
