"The Mani", Greece. Things to see and do?

We are planning a trip to Greece in May, 2001 and are interested in visiting "The Mani" in the Peloponese of southern Greece. Does anyone have any impressions of, or experience with travel in the area? Any Observations or ideas about what to see or do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tom,

I live in Athens.I tried to find a comprehensive website for Mani in English, but I couldn't find one.Well Mani belongs to Lakonia, situated in SE Pelopponisos.I suggest to bring or rent a car to get around.Otherwise you can take the bus to Sparti and then use the local bus system.Sparti doesn't have to offer much except Mystras ruinsAlso you can plan an excursion to Mountain Taygetos with its very diverse flora during Spring.Other must-sees in Mani are the caves of Diros.Great empty beaches for beach lovers, especially in the Neapolis and Gythion areas. If you want me to be specific for some areas in Mani answer to this thread and I will translate from the Greek guide for Mani and pass on this info.
George

Can I suggest another site for you to visit? www.footloosetravel.com has a moderator who seems to be very knowledgeable about the Peloponese, and he will reply to your query within a couple of days.

Tom: I have a book called "Deep into Mani"
P Greenhalgh and E Eliopoulos (Faber and Faber 1985) - probably not in print now. It shows photots of the spectacular scenery, churches, villages etc. I've not visited this part of Greece but it looks wonderful! NB it's about 15 years since I read the book, but if you want more details, specifics etc email me and I will try to help.

Refer Lonely Planet-Greece.It suggests Mystra & Monemvassia as the highlights.I am also planning a visit in April 2001.

Spent a fantastic two weeks about four or five years ago exploring the Mani peninsular and Southern Peloponnese.
We based ourselves in Stoupa, a small & friendly seaside village.
We have visited various parts of Greece but found the Mani to be unique.
We hired a car and drove all around the Mani peninsular looking at the unusual "tower houses" and wild scenery.
Further afield, there are secluded beaches west of Kalamata near Analipsis, Venetian Castles at Methone and Corone, Superb seafood tavernas at Gythion, and the medieval town of Monemvasia.
Further north, near Sparta we visited the Byzantine ruins of Mystras which were well worth the trip. The scenery as we travelled through the mountains from Kalamata to Mystras was spectacular.
Hiring a car is essential if you wish to fully appreciate the area.
Hope you enjoy your trip.
In Greece it is best to buy your guide books locally, there is a good choice available.
