Anne27, you said that you have lived in Wurzburg for 3 years...my wife and i are moving to Germany one week from today...I am in the military...and i'll actually be in Kitzingen, but we are thinking of living in Wurzburg. What are your thoughts of this...we also have a dog that we are hoping to find a place with a small backyard if possible...is this likely in Wurzburg or anywhere in between? Any other info would be great!! Thank you!

I prefer Bamberg to Wurzburg. But can't go wrong with either one.

As previous posters said, Bamberg is the more "authentic" i.e. better preserved city of the two. However, Bamberg is a "beer city" and Würzburg is a "wine city", so, my impression is, Würzburg has a little bit a lighter atmosphere to it. As to housing/real estate: For a house pretty much to city centre in decent condition with garden you should expect about 5-6 € per square meter as monthly rent. The rental market isn`t under pressure, there`s not really a problem finding a house to rent. Just check the local newspaper www.main-post.de, mainly on saturdays. One of the most preferred areas is called "Frauenland"(pretty close to Leighton Barracks, too).

Just to point out a technicality: while Wuerzburg is in the state of Bavaria, it is NOT a 'Bavarian' town. It is much rather in Franconia, which is the northern part of the state of Bavaria, and where the people speak a different dialect than in Bavaria proper, which is in general terms the area around Munich. Most Franconians and 'true' Bavarians will vehemently agree that W-burg is not a 'Bavarian' town. :-)
