The Italia, Panda or Aberdeen, which is your vote for best budget hotel in Rome?

I am going for a three week vacation in Rome this winter to study Italian. I have looked at apartments but they seem quite expensive. I would rather stay in an inexpensive hotel (50-60E) that is central to the historic center. I have exhaustively looked into prior threads and all rating sites available. It seems to come down to these three hotels. Your opinion?

We stayed at the Italia in the fall of 2002 and were well satisfied with it. It is conveniently located, on a reasonably quiet side street. I haven't stayed at the other two places you mentioned. However, a search on TripAdvisor rates them as follows:

#16 out of 786 - Aberdeen, based on 13 user reviews and one guidebook (Frommer's:
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/rome/H25926.html
Hotel website: http://www.travel.it/roma/aberdeen/
Wow. Looks nice.

#246 out of 786 - Panda, based on 3 user reviews and one guidebook, Fodors: http://fodors.com/rants/rrread.cfm?d...#Fodors_Review

It's new, apparently, so the rating isn't as high as Aberdeen and Italia.

#26 out of 786 - Hotel Italia, based on 22 user reviews and 3 guidebooks.

Despite the fact I was well satisfied with the Hotel Italia, next time I'd try the Aberdeen, if I could get the same price as at the Italia.

I stayed at the Aberdeen and I have never had a hotel room that clean! The staff was very nice and the hotel sparkled.

I stayed in the Hotel Romano a week ago, and we thought it was lovely. The staff was really good about anticipating our needs. It is near the Colloseum and Forum and Piazza Venezia, which we found to be a perfect location. You may want to look into that.

May I throw Hotel Paba into this mix? I'd like to know if it is a clean budget hotel.

We have also stayed at the Aberdeen, and the location (access to metro and bus lines) is super, as well as moderate walking distance with a reasonable amount of luggage from Termini (if you don't want to do the one stop metro hop to Pizza de Republicca).

My question would be, are their room rates in the fall that inexpensive???

With Rick Steves recommending it so highly, their prices have gone up significantly. In fact, when we last stayed there several years ago in November, we payed a little over 100 US per night.

Check out their web site rates.

Hi again,

I just checked their web site, and "low season" singles are 85 euro, and doubles are 109 euro.

Hope this helps.

We stayed at Aberdeen last October-it was fine. The Metro stop was around the corner about a block away, breakfast was fine but pack your own hairdryer if you need one because theirs was nothing more than a vacuum cleaner hose blowing air!

We stayed at the Aberdeen last year in late October. Although the public rooms were warm enough, we nearly froze in our very small room. At night we left our door slightly ajar to get some heat from the hall - and we piled on extra blankets.
The location is convenient to the train station. There's free e-mail access in the lobby. It's very clean.
