Doctor Who - the world's longest running Science Fiction series. Just remember the Cybermen predated Star Trek's the Borg by a decade or so.
Routemaster. The front engined rear entrance red London bus.
Blue Peter - started in 1958 and still running today. Children's TV show in the U.K. It shows you how to bake things, create masterpieces and works of art from toilet rolls and sticky back plastic, gives you history lessons like how Grace Darling saved the lives of the entire crew of the 'Forfarshire' or how Anne Frank remained hidden in Amsterdam for so long and was able to write her diary, and how to help the Third World or buy a pony for the Blind by saving milk bottle tops.
For most U.K. posters Blue Peter is a national treasure and John, Pete and Val are the golden era presenters.

"How so?"
"They are Welsh Daleks"

Can anyone remember the Blue Peter for common people - Magpie? It was a low rent version presented by a bloke with Brian May's hair and a bint that didn't wear a bra. It had a much hipper theme tune.

The main difference that I can remember is that when it came to their annual appeal Blue Peter always got you to send in stuff (milk bottle tops, stamps etc) where as Magpie asked for cold hard cash.

I'd completely forgotten about Jason the cat. It was siamese thing wasn't it? It just sat there giving everyone the evils. Cats are the devils work.

You can follow your childhood and the end thereof by the list of things on the telly that you wanted to cuddle. First off, Humpty, Jemima, Big Ted and Little Ted, then Petra and Patch, then Pan's People. In my last job the IT trainer was a member of Pan's People. I had to explain to her that it was her fault that I got spots. The lead singer of the Adverts (remember them - Gary Gilmore's Eyes?) was the head of the meals on wheels service. Who says local governement is dull? (Whoever does - they're right).

I think Dr Who is a welsh thing - it's made in wales anyway.

Yes your right the current Dr Who is set in Cardiff Swansea and surrounding area, they kitted out the Howells store in cardiff with Christmas decorations in July (just a week or two earlier than normal) and then proceeded to blow it up. Great !!
There's a Dr Who exhibition in Cardiff Bay until end of Feb, which is free. Though not got there yet will do soon.

Some of my personal favourites were Camberwick Green and Trumpton.

Any one remember them...Quality TV
But the very very best was Rainbow, I think I am actually very similar to Zippy in many ways (yellow with a zip)

Lol

"Doctor, were surropunded by horrible looking creatures lurching about speaking in an unintelligible alien tongue"

"welcome to Cardiff Rose"

Bestest kids programmes:

The tomorrow people
Blue Peter
Catweazle
Magic Roundabout (which is NOT about drugs - got it!)
Dr Who
Blakes Seven (I know it was meant for adults but only kids watched it)

Most completely inexplicable programme:

The Singing Ringing Tree. Does anyone have the foggiest what was going on there?

It's time for NOrth Americans to reclaim this thread. Who remembers Howdy Doody with Buffalo Bill, Clarabelle, Chief Thunderthud et al? As it went off the air around 1960, there may not be many of us here.

My American heart skipped a beat when I heard Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and Funeral say:

As in the words of Keith Partridge, "I think I love you."

The ultimate meeting and embracing of two cultures.

And what a warm, fuzzy feeling I got thinking back to the pre-disco days when love and family was flowery, innocent, happy and hip on most US sitcoms.

The big hair geezer was Tony Bastable and the doris with the bristols was Susan Stranks. She made quite an impression on this boy. Her mantle appears to have been taken up by Sharon Davis on the swimming programmes.

Why don't you's full title was "Why dont you switch of your television and go and do something less boring instead" Is it just me who can see the inherent flaw in this premise?

David - who was on Runaround with Mike Read but didn't win anything. I did however "runarahnd" a lot.

Caroline I am pleased to be of service, you see even through all this lunacy some travel related stuff comes through...lol
How long are you in Cardiff for?
Is there rugby on then?

Oh and I hated Magpie "one for sorrow" and all that tripe. That program was corrupt. I think kids that watched that came away disturbed...

;-)

I don't think that I'm English - I LOATHED Blue Peter. I always found all their charity doing a bit 'worthy', even as a kid.

Tallulah,

That's heresy! Please don't tell me you were a Magpie kid? They were all joeys and benders.

David, tada! wanted to squeak it in before the beer o'clock bell rang.

The setup is that she’s written a book about how bloody awful rude the world has gotten and devotes a whole chapter to the “Universal eff-off reflex.” She notes however that since that word is used so much, it’s lost much of its punch and that while she’d be shocked to hear her mother say it, she isn’t shocked by it in general anymore. She hopes that continued over usage makes it so completely banal that no one cares at all.

So, she states, “Blue Peter viewers wait for the day a children’s TV presenter says with a big smile, “And now it’s time to make an Effing model car park out of an Effing corn-flake packet!” At that point, all-clear sirens will sound throughout the land and the reign of Eff will be officially over”.

Presumably Blue Peter viewers are old enough to remember when eff-off wasn’t used by “polite” company. Or any kind of company.

The whole thing just made me giggle. The book was entertaining and a fast read – I read it over two nights.
