Ah, if my cat Mel could get my bag out of the closet for me, he would. And he'd take it down to the car, too. He never minds when I go for a trip, but when I come back, he gives me a look like, "Oh. It's you."

But my other cats practically weep when they see the suitcase.

Our little Shih Tzu Zebby is 10.5 months old, going on 40! We haven't traveled since we got him last November, but I am already heartbroken beacause we will leave him for to weeks in over the Holidays when we go to Paris. He'll be 16 months old.

He will be celebrating with his puppy sitter's family - I hope they wake him at Midnight on New Years Eve and give him a great hug and kiss for us.

All of my dogs, Zebby included go nuts whenever I put shoes on. They know that I am going out because this barefoot contessa, never never wears shoes at home.

No problem leaving the husband or the son to go away by myself, but leave the dogs ---- now that is a big heartache, "my babies" said in wailing voice!!

My cats know when they see the suitcases what's going too! They won't leave my side before the trip and afterwards, it takes days for them to stop being clingy. The guilt, I tell you. The guilt! The youngest one won't even let me go to the bathroom by myself--I guess he's preparing me for the parenthood

Have you ever called your answering machine while you're away and left messages so the pets can hear your voice? My husband did that last time--I thought that was very strange but then I wondered if the kitties were listening

I hated to leave our 3 wheaten terriers. so for 20 years we traveled in an rv which we bought just so the dogs could come.

Now they are gone, and we sold the rv because one trip without the dogs, proved sad. We are traveling as much as we can, but your stories make me long for my dogs.

Posting a second time...this is SO bizzare having posts show up only in "post a reply mode"! Is anyone else having this problem or am I the lucky one? Perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket...

Our cat approaches the suitcase as a toy, playing in it and on it until the moment comes when it's wheeled away. She then goes into pout and hide mode--I thought she was sad to see us leave but more likely she's mad we've taken her big black toy away. When the bags return she goes into sniffy sniffy mode.

My SO and I are seldom gone for any length of time together. It's usually just me so the dogs are fine then. We will leave them, with someone to come in and look after them, if we are gone for a long weekend. I just tell them that I'm going to the store and it's just a "long day". LOL They get over it in the end.

When i left my 1 year old Bichon with my husband and went to Italy with girlfriends, I called every day to see if she was Ok, i hardly asked my husband and grown children how they were doing. My husband said she ( Chloe) was fine and enjoying our beautiful dining room that had been turned into a doggie playroom. What did i care-- I really missed everyone but really worried the whole time about her.Since then my husband and I have traveled lots and each trip esp, the ones overseas have been wonderful but I always have called home to find out about my Chloe and until I knew she was fine, I truely didn't relax and really enjoy. She is almost 10 now and we love our vacations but i'd love to travel wiht her if i could. natjgc

loisco -- Now I remember from the meet the pets post that you had the wheatens.

Ours is approaching 4 yrs. old and still hates to be left alone for even a short amount of time. I joke that I'm going to have myself declared an "Emotional Support Person", as opposed to an "Emotional Support Animal", so we can take him with us everywhere.

His sad face and pleading brown eyes are so hard to say goodbye to.

Our primary beagle slinks away when the big suitcase comes out, but not for my overnight case. (The auxiliary beagle doesn't get the relationship between Big Black Wheelie and "the humans leaving for a week" just yet.)

The vet told me dogs live in the eternal "now" and they don't understand a week, a month, an hour, and so I shouldn't feel bad. Snort. The primary beagle damn well knows the difference between my packing for a week and an overnight business trip.

I have 2 cats and one dog. The dog - Fraser, gets weepy and tries ot escape out the front door to "join" us on vacation.
Our cat, Sam,... well,.. he pees in the suitcase. Is he mad? Is he sad? I just want to boot him to the next hemisphere, but I love him. He is 16.
Cute thread!!

Tries2Pack...I really can picture your wheaten and the sad eyes. What wonderful dogs they are. We have adopted another that lives nearby and we walk her once a week. Can you believe it...when we travel, I miss her too. If you want to talk about our wheatens..here's an email: [email protected]

I don't think I would ever want 8 dogs and 9 cats. While I agree that they generally offer unquestioning loyalty (unlike, for example, children), I cannot imagine living in the midst of a personal zoo.
