nonnafelice, thanks for the article. We are in the midst of a move from Brussels to the UK. Have to say, given a choice, I would rather be moving to France!
|
Nonafelice, what a disturbing article!!!! I am very upset about that bus incident!!!! What a nightmare :-(. Never experienced that in the UK 3 weeks ago...if I had I would never go back! That poor od lady.

The article -http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1328663,00.html
Is total crap. Perhaps small bits are true but it has got to be completely blown out of proportion. I cannot believe that this was printed in a reputable newspaper. Fearing for her safety in london because she is an american...that is complete crap. Does anyone who lives in london agree with this? |
What a horrible story and experience!
If it is true it is very sad. My daughter found that most men wanted to argue politics whenever they heard her American accent while she was in London, but neither she nor we have ever felt "hated" ... |
Anyone willing to give an ounce of credibility to the Guardian article cited above by a woman named Carol Gould should take a look at the publication it is excerpted from: www.frontpagemag.com.
|
I really do hope it is "crap"...how are we supposed to know the truth here? I thought the Guardian was a reputable newspaper?

obxgirl -
did you also read the frontpagemag version of her article? it's funny how the frontpagemag version plays up the antisemetic angle but the guardian version stresses the anti-american angle. playing her political agenda different ways to different audiences i guess. unfortunately, too many americans will believe this non-sense. |
walkinaround, I did read the full text of the Gould article at frontpagemag.com. I completely agree with you that the more rabid anti-semetic stuff was edited out of the Guardian article in order to play up the anti-US point. (Some of the edited out portions were so OTT as to be laughable.)
Will too many Americans believe the story anyway? The ones who already think so will find this further fuel for their fires. I guess some people are naive enough to take the article at face value but it took me less than 15 seconds at the frontpagemag site to see there was a much different agenda being pushed. |
Thanks to those who pointed out the frontpagemag version of that article about Americans in London. It can be found at:
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles...e.asp?ID=15464 I can only guess that the Guardian printed the article (with the more vitriolic portions edited out) in an attempt to give the opposition its day in court, since the author speaks in derogatory terms of the "Guardian-reading class." This seems to be more than the "Frontpagemag" site would do in the way of offering balance. I don't want to step over the political line here, but would agree with obxgirl that you should look at that site for its context before deciding how much credibility to give to Carol Gould. She herself certainly comes across as someone with enough attitude to set anyone's teeth on edge. |
I've just read both articles; and frankly, I don't believe either sets of anecdotes.
You WILL be challenged about the Iraqi war in Britain. Very few people believe it's a good thing, and, whilst most are very negative about our own government's role, most also believe that we are there to support the Americans, and not because of some fundamental belief our own governors had. However, people don't hate or dislike Americans, or,IMHO, Jews, as a consequence. And most people understand thatyour government's view isn't necessarily your own. |
quote>>>
You WILL be challenged about the Iraqi war in Britain <<<< i agree with the rest of this post but not this. americans need not fear that they will have to walk around getting challenged about the war. this is gross exageration. most americans will visit places where americans are hardly a novelty. of course there are some who carry around negative feelings for various groups of people but britain is very diverse and no matter what the beliefs, they generally see these groups as just a fact of life and will hardly notice or care where you are from. |
You're right, walkinaround, I probably overstated it. I just think that engaging with Americans just now, it's mostly the top thing on one's mind....
