The Duomo at Orvieto

This was my first visit to Italy (hopefully not the last!) and it was hard to decide where to go for our day trips. We chose not to drive ourselves, so we used our travel day, with a driver from Rome to Tuscany, for a stop in Orvieto. It might have been my favorite town of all those we visited on our day trips, and if you are at all interested in visiting churches, the Duomo there is an absolute must-see.

I have posted in more detail about it at https://polloplayer.wordpress.com/20...n-the-details/

Even after seeing St. Peter's in Rome, the cathedral at Orvieto did not disappoint. It is truly special. If you decide to visit, I would recommend engaging a guide, or at the very least, doing your homework in advance, because I did not and wish I had. It is an amazing place and has two exquisite chapels filled with stunning frescoes.

There is a parking lot as you enter the town so you can park and then take a short walk to the duomo and then into the very charming town. While Orvieto is a hilltop town, once you are there, the walking is not challenging - much more accessible than some of the towns in Tuscany.

Thanks thanks thanks! We visited Orvieto one year ago, and this is a beautiful way of refreshing memories.

Waiting for Orvieto Part Two in your blog.

By the way , I also enjoyed your posts about Rome in your blog.

Loved Orvieto, the cathedral and the gelato place across from the cathedral. New have some ceramics we bought in Orvieto, that we love and always bring back fond memories of our day in Orvieto.

We were just there two days ago. What an amazing cathedral. We loved walking through all the little shops. The problem was we parked right when we came into town but then got completely turned around and lost our car. It took two hours of walking up and down the hills trying to get our bearings. It was an advantage.

The excellent gelateria mentioned is across from the rear left side of the duomo.

So glad that others enjoyed Orvieto as much as we did. Next post will be about our amazing lunch - too bad we didn't know about the gelato!

@jelopez thank you for reading the Rome posts on polloplayer!

@puglife easy to get disoriented there - hopefully the long walk meant more available calories for pasta and gelato!

I was just there last week and it was amazing. I also loved all the shops. We had an amazing lunch in a tiny cafe that felt like we were in someone's house.

Funny story. We had just rented out car at he Orvieto Hertz. We drove up and parked in that lot. After spending the afternoon shopping, eating and visiting the Duomo we took a wrong turn trying to go back to the car. We walked and walked up and down steep hills trying to find the lot. My dad is 80 so finally we decided I would sit on a bench with him and my sisters would go to find the car. It took them an hour then took 30 minutes to remember where we were. We lost about 3 hrs but it actually provided a lot of laughs after we were done with our frustration.
