While we're all waiting for the continuation of numerous trip reports that have us holding our breath, I thought that I could perhaps provide a little interlude to keep you busy.

This is touching. So much love, and in a beautiful spot.

I hope none of our deceased pets expected a tombstone, 'cause they didn't get one. Two of them are buried below a nice wisteria but I can't even remember which two.

In the same spirit but far less elaborate, the spectacular tiered gardens of Powerscourt Estate in Ireland contain a cemetery where the estate's pets were buried. I don't envy the groundskeepers assigned to dig the holes for several ponies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerscourt_Estate

Thanks for the photos. I wanted to go on our last trip and didn't get there. So I'm grateful to get this preview. Have you ever been to the Picpus cemetery? It's where Lafayette is buried but that turned out not to be the most interesting part of the site. I recommend it. As a private cemetery, it has limited hours.

Thank you for sharing this peaceful place with us. My cat is in her usual place beside the computer and watched with interest. The black cat made her think of our neighbor's cat who frequently comes for a visit and a tease.

Southam, I, too, was thinking of the Powerscourt pet cemetery when I was looking at these pictures.

Oh, this is one of those spots that make Paris a delight.

Thanks for the photo of Rin Tin Tin's grave. I was disillusioned beyond belief to learn that RTT was Franch, not American, as he starred in a TV series when I was young[er]. Only to learn that <i>that</i> Rin Tin Tin was a fraud.

The photos and epitaphs on the headstones are all touching; my favorite was "Deçu par les hommes, mais jamais par Rufo" ("deceived by men, but never by Rufo").

This is definitely a special place, worth a morning's visit.

Daughter and I visited there on our trip to Paris in late September. It's a lovely spot and very touching to see that, even after many, many years, beloved companions are still remembered with fresh floral tributes. We felt like voyeurs to watch a man stand over his dog's fresh grave for about 45 minutes, then bend and kiss the stone before he departed.

Thanks for this. We've atually been twice, which I'm sure seems strange. The first time, it had just made it towards the top of "the list." The second time was right after our dog died - we just seemed drawn there, perhaps to pay some sort of homage. That, a nice day, and so easy to get there.

But I didn't know it was expanding, so I learned something new, as usual, from your report, kerouac.

I had to suppress a giggle while standing in front of Tipsy's grave. ;-)

merci - I was there long ago and lovingly remember the Dogs and Cats Cemetery - thanks for bringing it back to life. Funny the Rin-tin-tin - the Hollywood film dog is buried there - WW1 GI found it abandoned and brought it back to California and the rest is history! Sent remains back to France for burial - Walt Disney of course lived in Paris for some years (I believe!).

Thank you so much. There were some beautiful headstones but I think my favorite was the glass dome that held the tennis balls.

It made me think of the many Goden Retrievers I've met with tennis balls in their mouths.

Thank you, kerouac, for another wonderful vicarious trip to Paris. I would love to visit the cemetery some day.

We have a family pet cemetery near our camphouse on a river here in Alabama. It's about 30 years old, and is the resting place of about 15 pets that have belonged to us, our children, and grandchildren (and one Tomb of the Unknown Dog, who was found deceased on the road to our place.)

While the graves don't have elaborate tombstones like the ones in Paris, they do have very nice concrete markers with names and dates.

It was announced today that Diesel, the police dog who died in the raid on the terrorists in Saint Denis, will be buried in this cemetery.

This is very charming and a bit of something for everyone regarding the headstones. But are you sure there was nothing going on between Jean Harlow and Rin Tin Tin....I read in the National Inquirer (very reliable news source)that there was a torrid romance there!
