I recently read that the crypts are now permanently closed. Can someone confirm or clarify??

I have not heard that they are closed permanently, only for an undetermined amount of time for restoration. Someone on SlowTrav was in Rome last month and confirmed that. I passed by on a bus last Sunday 24th, and managed to glimpse the sign saying the crypt has been closed since December 2003 for restoration. I did not spot any indication as to re-opening.
